SWAMP THING Characters:
GENERAL SUNDERLAND

General Avery Sunderland was a nemesis to Swamp Thing throughout the early 1980's issues of SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING written by Martin Pasko. Through the Sunderland Corporation working with the DDI (a covert government operation), he was responsible for the "death" and capture of the Swamp Thing in the previous issue. Note the irony of his name - "sunder the land".

Notable appearances in SWAMP THING:

#21
"The Anatomy Lesson"
Sunderland arranges for Woodrue's release from jail and pressures him to discover how Alec Holland became the Swamp Thing. Once Woodrue explains that ST is not really Alec Holland, as previously believed, Sunderland contemptuously fires him. Sunderland has underestimated Woodrue, who revives ST and allows ST to kill Sunderland by smothering him against his body.

Annual #2
"Down Amongst the Dead Men"
Sunderland is next seen suffering in hell.

ST#72
"Gargles in the Rat Race Choir"
It is revealed that Sunderland's body is being cryogenically preserved in the basement of his company's office building.
