AMG REVIEW: A big jump in quality from 1995's somewhat uneven Pop Go! The Breetles, Spooj has sharper songs (which according to the publishing credits, stretch back over two full decades), better performances (for about half the album, Chris Breetveld augments his usual one-man-band recordings with guest musicians, including strings and horns, giving the album a fuller sound), funnier jokes (although naming the album after a popular slang term for semen probably isn't the best advertisement), and catchier melodies. These range from the hilarious mock punk of "Sign on the Bridge" and rueful character studies like "Fart" (as in old) and "A Prize for the Bride + Groom" to warmhearted power pop gems like "Warm Dove Plains." Best of all, at 15 songs in just over 47 minutes, Breetveld has solved the primary problem of Pop Go! The Breetles: songs that meandered on a bit too long.
