Chapter 1 - Help!
Do you think you might find it hard to function in a place where everything is written in little squiggles you can't quite decipher? Would you feel a little frustrated or maybe even completely lost?
Well, don't give up--help is available. In fact, there is a plethora of services offering information, advice, and assistance that can help make your stay in Tokyo go much smoother. And that is what this chapter is all about.
If you are thinking of spending time in or even moving to Japan, here are some entries from the Free Services and Giveaways section:
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO--ROB'S JAPAN FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) www.gol.com/jguide/rob.html This is a valuable Internet site for people planning to go to Japan, for it anticipates your questions about the country and answers them before you have to ask. The free service is hosted by the Japan Web Guide and includes lots of useful information about flights and customs; banking and finance; mail; cars and transport; getting an apartment; going home and more.
WELCOME FUROSHIKI (Tel: 5472-7074)
This is free welcoming service for new arrivals to Japan. Just call and
someone will visit your home or office bearing gifts--useful information, maps,
sample products and material related to your new community--all smartly wrapped
in a furoshiki (traditional Japanese carrying cloth). During a one-hour visit,
the person will be happy to answer any questions you may have about living in
Japan.
And tourists visiting Japan might find the following information on Free Publications very useful:
FREE NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, PERIODICALS
Tokyo has a number of free English-language publications that contain interesting
articles and stories--and are also excellent sources of information for what
is going on in Tokyo. These can be found at the Tourist Information Center,
major hotels, embassies, international schools, and many restaurants and stores
frequented by Tokyo's expatriate community. Look for Tokyo Weekender, The Nippon
View, and Tokyo Classified. New free publications are appearing all the time.
Keep your eyes open for them.
