OTOWN Concert Review
Hammerstein Ballroom
March 16, 2001
Where do we start? OTOWN could have easily sold out an arena like the Meadowlands, next time we hope they do cuz general admission sucks! First there are the people who get there at midnight to be first in line, there were three groups of baracades by the time we got there around 3:45 in the afternoon. We expected some people but not that many. And then of course the people who come late cut people in line. What the hell is that about? Everytime a baracade was moved to let us go closer to the front of the line, groups would run, push, and do just about anything to get to the front. That's just wrong because some people were there all day waiting and if you cut, your taking that away from them. Also, signs should be banned from concerts, there's really no need for them. Especially ones like "Ashley your my Angel!" How many times has that been used? They're not even original and they block people behind you from seeing. Another sucky thing, people who had mezzanine and balcony seats came down to the floor and they weren't suppose to be there. So it just got more crowded and harder to see. So to all you people who did that, you suck.
On to the concert, it was awesome. They are very talented guys who have gotten so much better since the show has been off. They sang almost the whole album only leaving out "Shy Girl" and "Sensitive". They opened the show with "All For Love" and it was great, of course. They all looked good, although Jacob needs to lose the dreads, or do something different with them. Personally, I think Dan looked the best, but they all really did look good. During "The Painter" they brought a girl up onstage to sing to, and some people actually booed her. How rude! OTOWN fans in NYC aren't very nice. I thought it was a cute idea. "Love Should Be A Crime" was cool because Ashley and Jacob played guitar while singing the song. They both looked hot with the guitar and it showed that they can do more then just sing and dance. Jacob was cute during one of the breaks when the guys had all left the stage, Jacob was alone and just started dancing like Michael Jackson and stuff, it was funny, you could tell he was having a lot fun. The best part of the night came right b4 the encore. Clive Davis brought the guys out. First he started talking about how their first single set a record and all this stuff. Then he said that tonight they their CD was certified platinum. The guys started jumping up and down, covering their mouths, and hugging everyone. They seemed genuinely surprised. The best part is, we know that'll make the show during the second season so we can't wait to see it. After that they sang "Liquid Dreams" and "Every Six Seconds". You could tell they were getting so much more into it after hearing about their CD. They were so happy and excited. Those were two of the best songs of the night, singing and dancing wise, they just stuck out as being incredible.
It was definitely a great concert, but hopefully next time they can go to arenas where there is assigned seating, cuz general admission is just horrible for everyone. Adding to the frustration were the opening acts. Lugo was the first one, he's a Ricky Martin wannabe who was onstage for too long. I don't even remember the second girl's name but she sucked too. Opening acts should know to sing two songs and leave. No one wants to hear them sing for 45 minutes. We're not there for them. One cool thing was Mike, Bryan, Ikaika, and the other guy in their group were there for the concert. We thought that was nice of them to come and support them, and Mike was rocking out the whole time. =) It'll be fun to see what they show of them on the show too.
