ELOHIM
Worksheet from the Evening Service - 13 August 2000
The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him. But we can only glorify Him and enjoy Him if we know Him. The knowledge of God is more important for the Christian, and even the whole world, than all things put together. It is therefore vital that we know the names of God as revealed in His Word.
Names in the Old Testament were often used as an indication of a person's character or some unique quality. So it is with the names of God.
ELOHIM is used 32 times in Genesis chapter one. It is used 2,570 times in the Old Testament.
I. The plurality of the name ELOHIM
Beginning in Genesis 1:1, God begins to tell us that He, ELOHIM is more than one -- a trinity. Genesis 1:26 "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..."
II. ELOHIM means EL mighty or the "Strong One"
ELOHIM contains the idea of governing and creative power and His omnipotence.
Deuteronomy 10:17 "For the Lord, your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons nor taketh reward."
III. ELOHIM means "The One who keepeth covenant."
ELOHIM is the name by which God makes covenant with men and preserves man for His name's sake. Genesis 17:7 "And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to 'thy seed' after thee." I Kings 8:23 "And he said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart."
