Prophetic Glimpses -- A Glimpse of
God
Isaiah 6
Sermon Outline from the Morning Service - 6 February 2000
Uzziah lost sight of how bad sin is; how much God hates it.
I. The Upward Look -- Isaiah sees the Lord (vv. 1-4)
One who sees the Lord see His holiness
A. The Vision
1. The scene was the temple. The moving of the door & the smoke are a reminder of Mt. Sinai showing the unapproachableness of God.
2. The angels had two sets for the purpose of covering themselves.
3. The focal point of the vision was God Himself -- in the temple.
B. The Voices -- the angels announcing continually
1. "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord." God has many attributes, but this aspect of His being appears to be emphasized in continually heaven.
2. "The whole earth is full of His glory." Think of how much more heaven is filled with His glory (to getan idea of what Isaiah was seeing)!
II. The Inward Look -- Isaiah sees himself (vv. 5-7)
One who sees the Lord sees his own sinfulness
A. Before the vision -- Isaiah was a prophet, the ones closest to God.
B. In the vision
1. God's holiness underscored Isaiah's sin. Is. 64:6
2. God allowed the taking away of Isaiah's sin: only by the altar and only through the means of confession. We cannot cleanse ourselves.
C. After the vision--it left a life-long impression that
ever humbled him.
III. The Outward Look -- Isaiah sees the need (vv. 8-13)
One who responds to the Lord sees his usefulness
A. The Lord asks for willing witnesses
1. The trinity of God is hinted at in this passage
2. Isaiah was willing to go because he both knew of the need and knew of the blessedness of being cleansed.
B. The Lord says that the work will condemn the people.
1. The thought of these verses are found 7 times in Scripture
2. Mt. 13:14-15 -- note that it is not that God doesn't want them to respond, but that the people didn't want to hear. 2 Cor 2:15-16
