Prophetic Glimpses -- Coming
Judgement
Isaiah 5
Sermon Outline from the Morning Service - 9 January 2000
I. Parable of the vineyard (1-7)
A. God had great expectations of Israel & Judah because He put
great expenditure in them.
B. Their lack of producing shows that they had abused the privileges they had and the
benefits they received.
II. Coming judgement on the nation (8-30)
A. Woe to those who are covetous (8-10)
1. They had an extreme desire to control everything to their
advantage. Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword. Gal. 5:15
2. The fruit God was expecting -- rejoicing for what they did have and contentment with
their lot. Looking for "bigger and better" is a search that will not be
satisfied
B. Woe to those who live for partying (11-12)
1. The sin of pursuing pleasure is especially prevalent today when
most people believe that life is meaningless.
2. For these people there is no history and no future, only the present
3. The fruit God was expecting -- seeking life's purposes; guarding our minds; we should
be lovers of God more than lovers of pleasure.
C. Woe to those who tempt God by doubting (18-19)
1. This is religious hypocrisy. Jer. 17:15; Ez. 12:22; and 2 Pet.
3:4.
2. The fruit God was expecting -- trust in God who is able to perform what He has
promised.
D. Woe to those who pervert the right ways of the Lord (20)
1. I think they are seeing leaders of the blind. Their exchange was
purposeful. Rom 1:32.
2. The fruit God was expecting -- always speaking the truth, even when it may not be
welcomed.
E. Woe to those who think they know everything (21)
1. This isn't talking about education, it is talking about attitude.
They are not seeing as God sees, but are content with their own appraisal.
2. Is. 44:25. Those who plan on life without God may end up with their plans ruined. Ps.
2:4-5.
3. The fruit God was expecting -- Prov. 3:5-6.
F. Woe to those whose judgement is perverted because of drink (22-23)
1. This is also condemned in Prov. 31:4-5.
2. The Bible talks about being deceived by drink (Pr. 20:1).
Illustration -- teaching about alcohol in medical school.
3. The fruit God was expecting -- sense and justice.
When we fail to produce the "fruit" He expects, the fault is ours.
"What more could I have done....?" (v. 4). Notice:
