Kevin Reveals He May Be Shooting A Movie, Producing Other Artists
At 31, pop idol Richardson is a tad young to be playing worldly Billy, but he comes with a pedigree of having performed the role on Broadway.
Last winter, Richardson -- the eldest of the Backstreet quintet -- made his Broadway debut as Billy and caused screaming fans to line up around the Shubert Theatre.
"It was a dream come true being on Broadway," says the Kentucky native who grew up doing school and community musicals. "To make my debut in such a cool show was awesome. 'Chicago' is theater at its stripped-down best. There are no scenery or costume changes, so it's all about the actors, the dancers and the music."
Richardson, filling in for Gregory Harrison, will perform for the show's three weeks in San Francisco, then he plans to jump into the London company, which has been up and running for five years now.
The Backstreet image -- suave, sincere and sweet as pie -- would seem to be at odds with the more reptilian lawyer Flynn.
"I can be cynical. We can all be cynical," Richardson says. "I play him as a young, very confident, hot, on-fire attorney who has everything going for him and knows exactly what he's doing."
Being in the music business, Richardson says he has encountered his share of smooth Flynn-like characters.
"I totally know this guy," he says. "I draw on the music industry for certain parts of this character. There are some good people in show business, and there are sharks."
If Richardson is on the road with "Chicago" and planning a long London stint, that must mean the Backstreet Boys have -- gasp -- broken up.
Not so, says Richardson.
"We've been together 10 years," he says. "We're all giving each other a chance to follow our dreams. Brian (Littrell) is enjoying his baby boy and planning a gospel album. A.J. (Maclean) is working on a solo album, and so are Howie (Dorough) and Nick (Carter). I may be shooting a film in Spain this winter, and I'm writing and producing for some artists I'm helping develop. When I'm not in acting class or at auditions, I'm in the studio with these musicians."
Earlier this year the Backstreet Boys gathered together to talk about future projects, but, as Richardson puts it, "not everybody was on the same page."
"We realize our fans want another record," he says. "We feel like we owe ourselves another record, but at this point, we don't feel like gettin' in the studio and puttin' it together. It'll all take care of itself when the time is right."
Kevin Talks Justin Timberlake, Lou Pearlman, BSB
At 30, Kevin Richardson is not only the oldest member of the Backstreet Boys, but he is also a studio boss, political activist, environmental crusader and part-time actor. This week, the Kentucky native will take the stage in the San Francisco stop of the national tour of "Chicago," reprising the role of Billy Flynn, the shady lawyer whom Richard Gere popularized in the movie. Richardson played the part on Broadway last year. After his San Francisco run ends Aug. 26, he will move on to London to make his West End debut in September. .
Q: So, you're playing a crooked lawyer.
A: Yeah, with the industry I'm in, I was able to pull from personal
experience.
Q: When you worked at Disney World, you used to play Tigger, Aladdin, Sebastian the Crab and one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How did that help you prepare for this role?
A: It didn't. I've been taking acting classes in Los Angeles for the past two years, so I've been honing my skills that way.
Q: Have you ever done theater before?
A: Growing up, I did high school and community theater. I was in "Barefoot in the Park" and "Bye Bye Birdie." When I was at Disney World, I was working in the park during the day and doing dinner theater at night. I used to play an Italian gangster in a musical review where we played songs from "Chicago," "Guys and Dolls" and "Cabaret."
Q: Was it hard having to constantly hide your occupation from your friends?
A: No. I had a blast. I was 20 years old and getting paid to do something I love, which is to play a character and perform in front of people.
Q: Are you sure that's enough experience to land a major role in a Broadway musical?
A: Well, the Backstreet Boys were taking a break in 2001 and I was home in Kentucky for Thanksgiving, and I got a call from my agent saying that "Chicago" called and asked if I would be interested in playing Billy Flynn on Broadway. I said, "Hell, yes!"
Q: How did that go?
A: It was a dream come true. I did it on Broadway for seven weeks during the blizzard and musicians' strike and everything. And the movie was just coming out as I made my debut, so there was this resurgence of interest.
Q: At what point did all the screaming girls in the audience start to bug out the producers?
A: It's not like that. They are very respectful. A lot of people misconstrue it. We do have a lot of young fans, but we also have a lot of them that are older. We touch a very broad audience, and I was glad to do something different and have people see that I have more dimension to me than just being the oldest guy in the Backstreet Boys.
Q: How does it feel to see Justin Timberlake out there mopping up all your old fans?
A: You know, I'm so happy for Justin. He's such a talented young man and he's very humble. And when I do see him on TV, I do miss it and want to get back out there. But I'm enjoying the break from the constant go, go, go. It's nice to sit back and breathe.
Q: Are the BSB officially D.O.A.?
A: If and when we're all inspired to do another record together, then we will. We're all on great terms with each other and we're just enjoying the opportunities the Backstreet Boys has given each of us. At the same time I have a production company, I'm working with some unsigned artists, I've got my own label, my own recording studio in Boston, and I'm opening a music school here in Kentucky. And I'm working on my acting. So I've got a lot of things going on.
Q: How big a cut of your "Chicago" salary does Lou Pearlman take?
A: Ha! He's out of our lives financially. I remember one time he said to me,
"If you open a hot dog stand, I get a percentage." We're no longer under that contract.

Snow Confirms He's Working With Nick
TORONTO, Ont. (andPOP) - The rumours are true. Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys is working with Toronto reggae singer Snow.
"I'm going to work with Nick," Snow told andPOP. "We're just becoming friends now. He's a good kid and I brought him to the projects here in Toronto and he chilled and he didn't have no bodyguards or none of that."
The material that they will record together could appear on either Snow's upcoming album, or Carter's second solo album.
"We'll just go in [the studio] and feel it and vibe it and if everything comes nice, everything comes nice," said Snow, who is most famous for his hit song, "Informer." "I just feel like music is music and I can do all kinds of music. We'll just work, have fun."
Snow and Carter performed together on July 1 as part of a Canada Day concert at Downsview Park in Toronto, the same place where 450,000 people assembled last week for the Rolling Stones concert.
"Off my new album, his favourite song is "Missing You." He was in town and just came down here to hang out. So I was like, 'Nick, you got to come on stage and sing that song with me.' He's like 'no problem'."
Snow will be releasing an album in the U.S. next week.

Nick to Release Solo Album In January
elgato writes "According to Nickolas-Carter.com, Nick Carter's management revealed the timetable for the Backstreet Boys star's next solo venture. His first single off of his second solo album will be released in December of this year, followed by the album in January of 2004. Nick's management stated that Nick will be coming to Europe to promote. And a tour will start in March. So, from all the timetables the guys have given, it looks like Howie Dorough's Latin/R&B album and Brian Littrell's gospel album will come out before Nick's and AJ McLean's rock/soul album will come out after."
Updated sales figures for Now or Never
Over at this week's Ask Billboard column, they have updated sales figures for Now or Never.
Hi Keith,
Could you tell me exactly how many copies of Nick Carter's "Now or Never" CD have sold? Was it ever certified gold?
Em
Hi Em,
Nick Carter's "Now or Never" album has sold 226,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Jive set debuted and peaked at No. 17 on The Billboard 200 on Nov. 16, 2002.
Gold and platinum certifications are issued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and are based on shipments to U.S. retailers. Gold status is reached when the RIAA can account for 500,000 copies shipped, while the platinum level is 1 million. The record label, management or artist must request certification by the organization. For more on that process, visit RIAA.org.
Oddly, the answer dances around the question of Now or Never's gold certification, which it achieved in December 2002. I dug back and found the page confirming it here.

Kevin Says Backstreet Boys Are 'Absolutely' Still Together
elgato writes "Kelmom 1 from the Mature Fan Club says, "Kevin is in Pittsburgh. Our local radio station talked to him this morning. They asked if BSB was still together and Kevin said absolutely. He said he is in town until Monday. They asked how is touring with 'Chicago' different from touring with the Backstreet Boys and he said it is much more professional touring with 'Chicago.' Hope he was a nice time here in Pittsburgh.""

Def Leppard Compares Themselves to BSB Again
Q: On your latest album, the group worked with Per Aldeheim and
Andreas Carlsson, who produced hits for Britney Spears and the
Backstreet Boys. What was that collaboration like?
A: We wanted to get some perspective on the sounds that would be
accessible for radio play. Some people thought it was sacrilege, but
if you listen to our work, our vocals are complex. Pop music is
strong on vocals. We're not that far from the Backstreet Boys --
we've just got more guitars.
Westlife Gives Major Props To The Backstreet Boys
elgato writes "NickFreak at BSBblvd.com says, "Any of you heard of
Westlife? Well they are an Irish boyband who are huge over here in
Europe and have tried to become a hit in the US. They have mentioned
BSB quite a few times in the past as being 'legends' and 'our
influences' etc. but on one show called Planet Rock Profiles which
was aired here in Ireland a few weeks ago they praised BSB no less
than 8 times in a half hour show! It was great! They went on about
how they wanted to try to live up to their high standards and if they
could be half as powerfull vocally as BSB their mission would be
complete! They went on and on and I now have so much more respect for
them! I have to admit when I saw their live show it was almost a
complete replica of BSBs Millennium tour with all their outfits from
the Black & Blue tour which drove me mad but AT LEAST they have the
decency to say that they love Backstreet Boys (which is more than I
can say for a few other OBVIOUS BSB rip offs *cough* *NSYNC *cough*)
and as Kian (one of the members) said, "When we formed we just wanted
to be as good a vocal harmony group as the Backstreet Boys.""

Carter, David, Washington have 'Blood' on hands
Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, Isaiah Washington and Keith David are set
to star in "Blood on a Happy Face" for writer-director Rick Thompson.
Lensing is scheduled to begin Aug. 1 in Manhattan and later move to
Brooklyn. The project is described as a quick-paced action-drama in
the vein of "Reservoir Dogs." It centers on an undercover agent
(Washington) who gets caught up in the underbelly of Brooklyn. His
world is turned upside down when the woman he loves double-crosses
him as part of an elaborate scheme to steal a large sum of money.
It's then up to him to save his own life. Carter plays the role of
Fazio, the catalyst for the crooked scheme, while David plays a
detective with a gambling problem who winds up working for a Russian
mobster. (Chris Gardner)

Howie was here: Backstreet's back, all right
If you partied on Second Avenue Friday night, you might have thought
to yourself, ''I tawt I ta a Backstreet Boy.''
You did, you did.
Howie Dorough, 29, aka Howie D. or Latin Lover, indeed was in town to
do some writing with songwriter/producer Sam Mizell, new Christian
artist Jadyn Maria and others. And Howie and his Nashville posse ;
which included songwriters Sam, Jamie Moore, Kari Kimmel, Brentwood
publicity machine Brian Mayes, and Lance Bass childhood pal Josh
Bracken ; hit the town Friday night.
Howie, et al., hit Wolfy's and then Tootsie's before spending an hour
or so at Bar Nashville. There, Howie hit the floor with some ladies
in his posse, but no one really approached him. There were lots of
people passing by and mouthing, ''Isn't that a Backstreet Boy?''
The posse then headed to NV on Second Avenue for some end-of-night
frivolity in the first floor bar area.
Again, Howie was recognized but not approached.
''Everyone was really respectful,'' a posse member said.
Howie D. isn't the first big pop star to hit Second Avenue. Several
years ago, a then-underage Britney Spears was tossed out of Bar
Nashville after consuming an alcoholic beverage.

The Brian Littrell Saint Joseph Foundation Golf Tournament held on
June 30th was a great success! 280 players participated in this
year's event held at the University Club of Kentucky. The tournament
netted a record $86,000 for Saint Joseph HealthCare's Heart
Institute and the Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Club for Kids. The
morning activities began with the "Golfing with Brian" event. One
hundred participants enjoyed a buffet breakfast, silent/live
auctions, a golf clinic and pictures with Brian Littrell and AJ
Mclean of the Backstreet Boys. Following this event, 25 of the guests
followed Brian and AJ for their first 9 holes of golf to cheer them

The Songs that Nick covered in the Sarasota Concert
The songs that Nick covered in the Sarasota concert/party, thrown by
one of the boat teams (Love Muscle), before the races were "Man In
The Box" (Alice in Chains) and "Any Way You Want It" (Journey), he
also played drums on "You Really Got Me" (Van Halen, but originally
written by the Davies brothers of The Kinks, a 60's group).
Nick wows metal heads
"The party Nick performed at was insane! It was like the "Steel
Dragon Tribute" concert from the movie "Rockstar". You had to go down
this LONG...DARK road - where for blocks and blocks - you'd see
nothing but cars parked on the side of the road. You'd think the
entire city of Sarasota was there. The band was playing was an 80's
rock "hair band" cover band. Nick performed an "Alice In Chains" song
and a Journey song (fast). HE ROCKED OUT! The crowd was all metal
heads and we didn't think they would welcome him. I wouldn't say they
were thrilled at first...but @ 30 seconds into the first song I had
guys around me yelling 'He f...n' rocks!' The crowd was loving it! He
flashed the crowd his nipples. (I ask you again - what has happened
to MY modest boy?!?) He played drums on a song and when he said good-
bye the crowd was going insane. They loved him. There were barely any
fans there - all metal heads."

Nick Carter in T.O.
Nick Carter is currently in Toronto working on his second solo album
with none other than ex-Motley Crew bad boy Tommy Lee. The boys had
kept a low profile until this week when Nick Carter appeared on stage
with Snow during Toronto's Canada Day concert at Downsview Park. The
appearance has sparked rumours that the two are teaming up in the
studio. According to a source they are currently "hanging out" and
are working towards a collaboration.
As far as the Backstreet Boys go, the guys will regroup soon to begin
work on their next album for Jive Records. Meanwhile, Howie Dorough
plans to record a solo album and Kevin Richardson recently completed
his Broadway run in the musical Chicago.
Nick is in Mississauga, Ontario
That's right, folks! Backstreet Boy Nick is staying with his make-up
artist in Mississauga, ON, Canada - just east of Toronto - for a few
weeks. I can't disclose the exact address due to privacy concerns.
He's in town doing some song writing with Canadian music artist Snow.
Nick's been spotted at the neighbourhood Kentucky Fried Chicken and
swimming with friends.

MTV News about the Accident with Brian and AJ
Two members of the Backstreet Boys were involved in a three-vehicle
accident Monday night in Lexington, Kentucky.
Upon leaving a charity golf tournament at the University of Kentucky,
a car in which A.J. McLean and Brian Littrell were passengers was
sideswiped by a car that had been struck by another car. According to
Lexington police, who described the incident as a "very simple fender
bender," the Toyota Camry driven by Littrell's mother, Jackie, and
containing McLean, Littrell, Littrell's wife, Leighanne, and their
son, Baylee, was stopped at a light on Leestown Road. As they
proceeded into the intersection, the car beside them was struck by
another vehicle attempting a left turn, causing their Camry to be hit
as well.
Only minor injuries such as soreness were reported, and damage to all
three vehicles was minor. The other vehicles had flat tires, while
the Camry's front bumper suffered some damage, Sgt. Rick Curtis said,
but not enough to set off air bags.
"[A.J.] banged up his knee a bit but said all were fine," A.J.'s
mother, Denise McLean, said. "He said he had just put his seatbelt on
seconds before the Escalade hit them, and said it could have been
much worse if Brian's mom had not turned the wheel to miss the truck
head on. He was pretty shaken by it all since he has never been in an
accident like that before. But he's doing fine."
The charity tournament they had attended, "Golfing With Brian!," was
the second annual fundraising event for Saint Joseph's Hospital and
the Brian Littrell Healthy Heart Club for Kids.

BSB Back in 2-3 Years, AJ's Touring, Only Kev & AJ
Have Seen Baylee
cdn_gewels who attended the Golfing With Brian event:
While the Boys were golfing, Leighanne asked about
Nick saying that she had seen a video and he didn't
look well during his tour. I spoke up and told her
that he was ill at the beginning of his tour and I had
heard he was on antibiotics. I then mentioned that it
was incredible seeing him in concert because he is so
passionate when performing. I told her that I just
smiled all the way through his concert and she
responded with, "Awww!"
amy4BSB at LD who attended Golfing With Brian event
reports:
We also got to hear one of Brian's demos! The main
chorus was... "Then I saw your face...." really good
song! AJ even knew the words! I guess he had listened
to it several times through already.
Then we started talking about Aaron and he was saying
how Aaron has grown up so much and is looking like
Nick more and more. I said, "I know! He even talks
like him too! It's scary!" And AJ looked at me and
said, "I KNOW! Aaron's getting more and more vulgar
and crude each day!" and he laughed. LOL... that was
After that... I said... "Ok AJ so realistically... how
long is it gonna be before the next BSB album? Are we
talking years...months... what?" He said "Probably two
to three years." I was like "what?!?" And he said...
"Well I mean I can't say for sure... but with us all
doing our own thing, and knowing us, it will take a
while to get us all together." But he did ensure me
that they would be back. I can tell that they ARE
serious about recording again and they are NOT over...
contrary to popular belief. But the thing that I liked
about it was that he looked me right in the eyes when
we were discussing it... like he didn't try to shrug
me off. I think he could tell that I wanted a genuine
answer, and he gave me the best one he could at the
moment.funny.
Then I asked him about his solo album and he told me
he's hoping it will be out in the fall. I asked him if
he was planning on doing a tour... like a club tour
and he responded very enthusiasically "Oh yes!
Definitely. There is NO way I could NOT tour. I can't
stand not touring. I HAVE to be out there on stage."
(So AJ fans... you heard it from me, he's going on
tour!)
Someone also asked him if he likes to be called AJ or
Alex. He said it doesn't really matter to him, but no
one calls him Alex but his mom (and that's only when
she's mad at him!) so he prefers to be called AJ. I
thought I would post this because I know some people
were concerned about calling him AJ after the rehab
ordeal, but it sounds to me like AJ wants to be known
as AJ.
The best part about the golfing was Leighanne. She
told us that none of the guys have seen Baylee besides
Kevin (and that was only because they were together
for their grandfather's funeral) and AJ (and AJ just
saw him this weekend) She said it's kind of sad in a
way. She also said that none of the guys sent in their
response cards for their wedding, and Howie was late!
She said when Brian and Leighanne opened the church
doors after walking down the aisle, they ran into
Howie and he was like "Ahh!!!" because he had been
peeking in the church doors watching the wedding...
LMAO.
Leighanne also talked about how much she wants the
group to be together again. (So there goes the theory
that Leighanne is responsible for the downtime of the
group!) She said she's trying to get them back
together. She told us that after Brian finishes
recording, hopefully the group will be together in the
winter. We all responded that we miss them and she
said "I know... I miss seeing them together!"
Later, we got on the discussion of Jive Records. She
informed us that that is one of the main reasons for
the problems. She said "Jive is raping them... it's
horrible" She said that they can't get out but they
are trying... you could tell she was really disgusted.
She also said that she wishes we could hear the 4
songs that the group (I think it was just four of
them) recorded... she said they are SO good.
Somehow we got on the discussion of Carson Daly (I
think it was because Jesi was talking about how her
digital camera wouldn't work and it didn't work when
they met Carson) She said "Ugh I don't like him..."
And she turned the other way to say why so I tapped
her shoulder and said "Why don't you like him?!" and
she laughed and crossed her legs and said "Ohhhhh so
you want the DIRT huh?!?" And we laughed together... I
said "Yeah! Gimme the gossip!"
She said that Carson made some comment about how much
older she is than Brian and said that she looked like
his "aunt". She said that when she met Carson, she
introduced herself by saying "Hi, I'm Brian's AUNT" in
a sarcastic tone and put her hand out like she was
shaking his hand... HAHA! We were cracking up laughing
and she said the look on HIS face was priceless... he
looked horrified. She said that "He can dish it... but
he can't take it when someone throws it back at him"
I told her that I remembered Carson saying something
about that during the I'll Never Break Your Heart
video... and she seemed surprised and said "You did?!"
She rolled her eyes and said that he's always been
rude to her. We were talking about how rude it was and
what a jerk he is. lol.
I Can't Believe Nick Showed Up @ Downsview Park Today!!!
I couldn't believe it when Snow said Nick was his special guest and I
thought it was so cute when he sang with him and he knew all the
words to Snow's song....Nick sounded so good too!!!! And his Canada
shirt (for Canada day) was so cute too!!!
I guess he became buddies with Snow, after Snow showed up at Nick's
show here in Feb.

MTV Updates on Denise McLean's Book
"Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean's mother Denise - who acted as the band's publicist and fan-club coordinator during its beginning stages - is putting out a book this December about her experiences with her son's group. It's called "Backstreet Mom: A Mother's Tale of Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean's Rise to Fame, Struggle With Addiction and Ultimate Triumph," and Denise told MTV News that the book will also contain several previously unpublished pictures. AJ and a Solo Album
AJ McLean was a special guest at friend Shane West's 25th birthday party which was held at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. The event featured several on-stage performances, and all the proceeds went to VH1's Save the Music Foundation. AJ was also one of the performers that night. His set was nothing short of amazing and the choice of songs performed may be a hint at the type of music that will be on his upcoming solo album. The U-Daily News weighed in on the Backstreet Boys star's performance saying he "took a solo turn on stage with an impressive pop-free song set." So, you probably shouldn't expect to hear any pop music on his CD.
AJ Doing Solo Album, Kevin Bringing 'Chicago' to London
Kevin Richardson was in Louisville, Kentucky yesterday to set up his own recording studio there. Fox News interviewed him and bhank from the Backstreet Boys forum at LiveDaily.com pulled a direct quote from the broadcast. The reporter asked him: "And the real big question-what's going on with the Backstreet Boys?! What's next?" Kevin responded, "Well, as you know I'm busy-I just finished the Broadway musical 'Chicago'-I'm getting ready to do it in London. Brian's enjoying his brand new baby boy. Nick is doing another solo project. AJ is recording a solo project. Howie's recording a solo project. But we're not broken up and when the time is right and we're all focused as a group-we will do another record." So, all the guys minus Kevin will release solo album, probably all this year. Meanwhile, Kevin will be working on acting gigs like Broadway and possibly movies.
Backstreet Boys Opening Music Workshop in Louisville
The Backstreet Boys: one of the most successful bands listened to by young people. And it's a group with strong Kentucky connections.
Backstreet Boy band member Kevin Richardson warmed up his vocal cords to shoot a public service announcement in Louisville, but his real news will mean show business in downtown Louisville.
"I'll be in an out of Louisville, sowing the seeds here," he says.
Where the lunch crowd walks, and tucked in between the art galleries of West Main Street, Richardson and his friend Keith McGuffey soon plan to open the Music Workshop at the top of the Meyer Building.
The workshop will offer the whole package to anyone looking for a start in the music industry.
City leaders who've watched the project say it'll be a magnet to young people, but one with a bigger mission.
"They eventually are going to have a record label on Main Street that attracts both national stars and local stars, which will bring a lot of revenue to this community," says Denise Bentley, Metro Council (D).
Richardson says in two to three years he plans to retire and raise his family in Kentucky...and how will they know their joint project has been a success?
"If we help one person make it in the industry we know we've achieved it," Richardson says.
Like the curve of a smooth note, West Main Street will soon be home to aspiring musicians.
The opening date for the Music Workshop is coming up. The business is located at 624 West Main Street. It opens August 1.
Richardson is encouraging people to enroll by calling 587-9898 -- but call closer to August. Right now, they're still building the classrooms.

Developer pulling out of Backstreet hotel project
The Associated Press Unhappy with the city's incentives offer, a
developer says he's pulling out of a hotel project for downtown
Huntsville that included the Backstreet Boys.
Martin Belz, chairman of Memphis-based Peabody Hotel Group, said his
firm's offer to build a full-service hotel next to the Von Braun
Center was off "unless the city changes their mind about what they're
going to do."
Belz said the city's $37 million incentive package was not enough "in
terms of the quality and the type of hotel we would want to do." The
city's offer includes a 2.5-acre site, meeting and parking space, and
road improvements.
Belz's comments Thursday came shortly after Kevin Richardson of the
Backstreet Boys and Rick Baker of Huntsville, Richardson's financial
adviser, met with a couple dozen business leaders to rally support
for a project that would include a hotel and entertainment center.
"We have everything squared away with that property," Richardson told
The Huntsville Times, referring to the Heart of Huntsville at
MarketSquare mall, the proposed site for the entertainment center.
"We're kind of waiting to see how the hotel negotiations are going to
go, before anything else, because the hotel could and would play a
big part in the entire project," Richardson said.
On Thursday, Richardson and fellow Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough held
a press conference at Madison Square Mall to talk about their vision
for the entertainment center, which would be similar but a bit
smaller than Peabody Place in Memphis.
Peabody was one of eight developers to submit letters of interest to
the city for a downtown hotel.
The city is still looking at financial and other information
submitted by all the companies before asking a few finalists to
submit bids, said Joe Vallely, the city's economic development
director.

Brian, Leighanne and Baylee on Q100 this morning
I listen to q100 from Atlanta here at work via stream audio. Guess
who called in to the station??? Yep! Bri & Leigh!!! One of the djs is
getting married and the other djs were telling listeners to call in
with marriage advice. I was half paying attention then I heard this
REALLY familiar voice and thought wow that guys sounds just like
Brian. That of course made me lean in and pay attention! LOL They
were on for about 10 mins. The advice Brian gave was to look at your
bride right in the eyes and just focus on her and nothing else. And
about marriage in general he said to just jump in head first and
enjoy it. He said that because there are different levels of a
relationship – first she's your girlfriend then she's your fiancée
which makes you feel grown up and that he really loved having someone
to call a "fiancée", then she's your wife – Bri's still getting used
to saying that. LOL And he said to learn to say "yes dear" A LOT!
Leigh said that's right! LOL A dj asked Leigh how long it took
to "train" Brian, she said about 2 years – but that's why she got him
young!
There was a lot of joking around and laughing which was GREAT!! They
were asked about how they handled a long distance relationship and
Leigh said that it takes patience and a lot of phone calls! They saw
each other about 8 months out of the first 2 years. That the majority
of their dates were on the phone. Brian said to make sure you call
when you say you will and said that it's like a real date, you should
be on time and everything. Leigh said you just have to work hard and
make the relationship work and thinks that because of the way
they "dated" that it gave them a special bond, then said we have a
bond that everybody wants and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Bri
said you have to really love the family you are going into.
You could hear Baylee in the background so they started talking about
him. One of the dj's has an 8 month old boy so they were comparing
them. The 8 month old is really little cuz he was 2 months premature
and that he's so much smaller than other kids his age. Leigh said
ours is a Holston (?)!! Baylee is 16.6 pounds now!! She said that
they're starting to run out of clothes. She also mentioned that he is
teething.
They talked about the Hero Awards and what that is about and that
Brian will be singing a song that will probably be the first single
on his gospel album. Then they talked about BSB and Brian said they
are still a group but just doing things for themselves right now and
that he hopes to record another BSB album within the next year. He
hopes his solo cd will be out by the end of the year or early next
year. One of the dj's said well you're loaded you don't need the
money and Leigh said that they have bills to pay so Bri better get
back on tour. LOL They asked which label he was doing the new album
under and he said he's still under Jive but that he wants to get out
and that BSB is still fighting with them but that he couldn't talk
about. One of the dj's said oh you're not doing it under your own
production company? Then they were joking how he wanted to get out of
his own production company.
Brian says that BSB have been together 10 years this past April and
how many boybands have done that? He said when he goes into a store
in town and a mother says I have your Greatest Hits cd and I love
it! He said he loves when he hears things like that because that's
what he wanted to do – make music that touches people. Then they
talked about being labeled a boyband and Bri said he really doesn't
like to be called that. They're grown men now. They were a boyband
when they first started out but not anymore. Then Baylee made a sound
like "bad" so they started joking that his first words
were "bad rap". LOL

Kevin Richardson Fights For Artists' Rights. And Wins
Backstreet Boys star Kevin Richardson is best known as 1/5 of the mega-selling Backstreet Boys. But he is also making a name for himself in the world of law. Fans can remember that in 2002, Kevin teamed up with Senator Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to try to stop President George W. Bush from making changes to several environmental laws that would negatively affect the miners and mountainsides of the Kentucky countryside. Kevin even testified on Capitol Hill. Thanks to their efforts, Bush was never able to pass the bills he was pushing for. Kevin also picketed on Broadway to fight for the musicians who were canned from Broadway plays. A week later, the musicians' positions were restored. Well now, another legislation has gone in Kevin's favor. In September of last year, Kevin, the Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, the Eagles, Bing Crosby, and other artists testified in court that record labels have been breaking the law by falsely under-reporting artists' royalties. The Backstreet Boys have had problems with Jive Records not properly reporting the numbers. Well according to www.HitsDailyDouble.com's Rumor Mill, California lawmakers just passed bill SB 1034 that would "give artists the assurance they deserve-that record companies must accurately report royalties to them or face penalties." Today, Kevin-along with David Crosby, Neil Diamond, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Toby Keith, Mya, Tim McGraw, Stevie Nicks, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt, Michael Stipe, and more-is now protesting the FCC's proposed de-regulation law that would allow monopolies like ClearChannel and Viacom to own even more radio stations, newspapers, and television networks.

Backstreet's Howie D Goes Bilingual
Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is set to start work on a solo album that will include songs in both English and Spanish. He tells Billboard that during the Backstreet Boys' current break, he decided to shop some of his songs -- he has had tunes cut by Mandy Moore and K-Ci & JoJo, among others -- and those discussions led to his own project.
"It will be a Latin-influenced album," Dorough says, "but it will have an international feel so it's not just caught in South America. I never want to neglect the fans in Japan, Europe, Canada, or America." He expects producers to possibly include Emilio Estefan, Rudy Perez, and Steven Morales.
Though details haven't been finalized, Dorough says the project will most likely be a joint venture between BMG Latin and Jive.
In late March, the Backstreet Boys announced they were opting not to begin work on a new studio album in favor of pursuing "individual endeavors." Dorough told Billboard at the time that he had written 12 songs on his own and another 15 with the other members of the group.
Dorough will be the second Backstreet Boy to release a solo album; Nick Carter's "Now or Never" was issued last year by Jive.

Brian is Putting Out a Solo Album
Brian and Leighanne were on Star 94 this morning (thanks to Krystle and who she got it from). You can go to here and listen to the chat…it last 6 minutes and 16 seconds. You can hear Baylee making noises in the background. It's a good chat.

'Hollow' Cast
Backstreet Boy Nick Carter Sets Feature Debut
Tue May 20, 2003 03:39 AM ET
CANNES (Hollywood Reporter) - Backstreet Boy Nick Carter is making the jump to the big screen, signing on to star in the "Sleepy Hollow"-inspired horror thriller "Hollow."
The indie project also will mark the feature debut of "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" star Kaley Cuoco.
Budgeted at less than $5 million, "Hollow" is described as a present-day retelling of "Sleepy Hollow" set in a small New England town where a group of high school seniors learn that they are the direct descendants of those responsible for a tragic event that begins to replay itself. No director is set for the film.
Carter, who said he has spent a lot of time searching for the right film part, plays a high school jock and captain of the football team in a role that he describes as a "hormonal brute with a bit of a 'tude."
"It couldn't have been more perfect for what I was looking to achieve in making the move into acting," Carter said. "I didn't want it to be something that felt fake or just not right. The role itself is perfect. It's not too much; it's just enough to show people that I can do it."
Rounding out the cast alongside Carter and Cuoco are Nick Turturro, Judge Reinhold, Kevin Zegers, Joseph Masiello, Eileen Brennan, Stacy Keach and Melissa Schuman, the latter having had a brush with pop fame as part of the girl group Dream.

Kevin Says BSB Coming Back 'Very Soon'
Kevin Richardson was just featured on the WKYT television network in Kentucky for an interview on staying fit. Kevin took host DeeAnn Stevens to the gym with him to show her his workout routine. He told DeeAnn that "It's like this enate thing inside me. I have, I have to exercise or I don't feel right." He then showed her how to box, which he started doing two years ago during a Backstreet Boys world tour. DeeAnn says, "He does it now 3 days a week at the Hollywood Y in Los Angeles. The other days he saves for weight lifting and cardiovascular work outs." Kevin said that boxing allows him to get out the aggression that builds up inside of him from sitting through LA traffic. DeeAnn concluded by saying, "[The Backstreet Boys] haven't broken up or anything. He said that they are individually pursuing different interest and one day very soon they hope to get back together and cut another record
(typed up by Brian's KY Love at MatureFanClub.com.)
(In Studio WKYT)
Barbara: We're having fun with fitness this week, with our more well known friends.
Sam: That's right. DeeAnn Stevens stepped in the gym with Backstreet Boys Kevin Richardson and she joins us now with her report. Pretty good looking guy huh?
DeeAnn: Yeah --- not, not too bad at all to spend the day with. Well, we all have different ways of trying to stay in shape. Kevin's choice is boxing. He proved not only to be a hit on stage but a true knockout in the gym.
(On Location in LA)
DeeAnn: Kevin Richardson says its only natural for him to keep his body fit. Growing up he played all kinds of sports.
Kevin: It's like this enate thing inside me. I have, I have to exercise or I don't feel right.
DeeAnn: But, his exercise of choice, for now, is in the ring.
Kevin: In the gym I went in and watched this guy training for like 2 hours. I'm like, wow that looks challenging, looks really fun. I was getting bored with just lifting weights and runnin' on the tred. So, I uh asked the guy if he would train me, the next day he said he would. And uh, it turned out to be Roberto Duran's former trainer.
DeeAnn: Kevin started boxing 2 years ago when he was on tour with the Backstreet Boys. He does it now 3 days a week at the Hollywood Y in Los Angeles. The other days he saves for weight lifting and cardiovascular work outs.
Kevin: It just helps me get my aggression out, gets me in shape. It's really good for the upper body, the arms, and the back. *Jumping rope* Get, get your heartbreak on *Elvis music is playing in the background* Good for keepin rhythm, good for keepin you on your toes really really good I'm on my toes a lot, add some punching and stuff.
DeeAnn: Punching, that's where we started, with a quick lesson on proper technique.
Kevin: When you're punching you'll want to have your stants, not too wide. So, your feet will be about a shoulder length apart.
DeeAnn: Ready .. set .. and it's time to test our skills
(Both are punching)
Kevin: Girl, you an athlete! (DeeAnn punches him in the arm, Kevin acts like it hurt)
DeeAnn: Well, I wouldn't go that far. But, it is an entertaining way to get moving. And according to this Kentucky turned LA star a good way for him to deal with life in the big city.
Kevin: I live out in Los Angeles now and drivin in that traffic sometimes you just wanna RRRRAAAAAHHHH! and so it's good to go to the gym and take it out on the punching bag.
DeeAnn: (still punching) I could get into this!
Kevin: It's fun! Get your aggression out!
DeeAnn: That's right!
(Back in WKYT studios)
DeeAnn: So, wither it be taking your uh aggression out or just getting in shape, boxing is one fun way to get into fitness. One other thing Kevin mentioned he likes to do when he comes home to Kentucky he enjoys hiking at the Cathedral Domain, a place that holds many memories for him. His dad use to run the place and Kevin was a camp counselor as well as the hike leader.
Barbara: It means all those campers down at Cathedral Domain will be on the look out for him.
DeeAnn: That's right. They'll probably have a boxing ring built soon.
Sam: So, he's still a member of the Backstreet Boys right?
DeeAnn: Yes, he's still a member of the Backstreet Boys. Uh, they haven't broken up or anything. He said that they are individually pursuing different interest and one day very soon they hope to get back together and cut another record.
Barbara: Well, it's a fun look at his life away from Backstreet.
Howie D Phones Into JoJo's 9 @ 9
Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys called into JoJo's 9 at 9 countdown tonight. He was on for a good five minutes or so. JoJo talked about how he was surprised at Wango Tango when Howie went on-stage and announced that he was doing a solo album. Howie said that the label heard some of his songs and really encouraged him to do an album. He'll fly to Miami in 3 weeks to work with a number of great Latino artists and producers like Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan's husband. JoJo told Howie that he'll be a judge on the new show 'Fame.' Howie said he heard about that from Johnny Wright (Howie said they still keep in touch). His in-studio with JoJo will be down the road. Howie also said his album will come out around Christmas or early next year.

Song written by Nick on the What a Girl Wants soundtrack?
"Long Time Coming" written by Nick Carter, Paul Barry and Mark Taylor, is performed by actor Oliver James. Assuming this is the same Nick Carter -- and Nick's worked with Mark Taylor before (on Miss America), so the link is there -- this'd be the first time that one of Nick's songs has been recorded by somebody else.

stars expected to be in the film are Brittany Snow, who plays Meg
Pryor in the NBC hit 'American Dreams', as well as Nick Carter of
Backstreet Boys fame.
Schuman will play the role of 'Amber' and she has dubbed the movie as
a "modern version of The Sleepy Hollow."

XXL Magazine, Issue No. 47
Question - Are you jealous of him [Ja Rule]?
Q - Your label has been dissing you lately. How do you feel about that?
New NON Review
By Gill Hosie from the UK rock magazine Fireworks.
Most of us shouldn't know who Nick Carter is and those of us who do
are probably wondering why he is getting reviewed in Fireworks. Well,
Nick Carter is a member of the Backstreet Boys and this is his first
solo album and it rocks with the best of them!
The album kicks off with his debut single, "Help Me." This is a
catchy pop/rock tune (co-written by Von Grooves' Matthew Gerrard)
which had caught my attention several times while channel surfing
through the music channels on satellite.
The next track is "My Confession" and you now start to gradually feel
the album going along a more rockier road. By the time I reach track
3, I was gobsmacked - "I Stand For You" is an out and out rocker with
catchy chorus and power chords. "Girls in the USA" is absolutely
amazing. Imagine a mix of Def Leopard ("Pour some sugar...) with
early Danger Danger and throw in a touch of nu-breed. Pure stadium
rock.
The rock vein continues all the way through with the likes of "Is it
Saturday yet?" and "Blow Your Mind." One thing to mention - on
several of the tracks the first 30 or 40 seconds sound a bit weird,
but once they get going they do literally blow your mind!
Things do lighten up slightly, however, with a few ballads thrown
into the mix. Do not expect Backstreet Boys type ballads. These are
pure power ballads. "Do I Have To Cry For You" is reminisent of early
Bryan Adams whilst the awesome "Heart Without a Home" is a pure AOR
(Album Oriented Rock) classic. "Miss America" is another one of my
faves. Lyrically not one for the teenyboppers, but it has a slightly
sensual sound to it - kinda reminds me of Prince circa "Purple Rain."
My only criticism of the album is Nick's voice which is a bit weak
for my tastes. I much prefer a more manly voice, and had the ballads
of "Miss America" been sung by the likes of James Christain or Stan
Bush, then the whole AOR scene would have been raving about them.
But this IS a great album. Don't let the fact that he is in a boyband
put you off. I don't know if he's just trying to be trendy since
rock's on a comeback or if he's finally getting a chance to do the
kind of songs that he likes. The latter I hope and I look forward to
the next one.
Try it. I made the editor listen to it for awhile before I told him
who it was. He was so shocked that he asked me to review it!
Brian Hosting Heroes Awards
Like most other parents of a 6-month-old, Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell and his model/actress wife, Leighanne, are probably ready for a night out on the town. However, their responsibilities will extend beyond picking a gooey romantic comedy at the local googleplex.
The couple will host this year's Heroes Awards to benefit the Atlanta chapter of the Recording Academy's Professional Arts Education Programs and MusiCares Foundation. The benefit is slated for June 5 at the Westin Peachtree Plaza downtown.
This year's honorees include "the Godfather of Soul" James Brown, Savannah guitar and drum manufacturers Fred and Dinah Gretsch, 99X and Q100 programming director Leslie Fram and the members of TLC.
Tickets are available by phoning 404-249-8881.

Jive Records Up To Their Same Old Games
(DLS) - Jive Records has quickly earned the reputation of being a record label that restricts their artists from doing what they want to do.
By far, the most disrespected band on the Jive Records roster are the Backstreet Boys who have, on many occasions, been "screwed-over" by the label they signed on with in the early 90's.
Outkast and Elton John are two big artists that Backstreet got the chance to work with a few years ago. After recording a "The Call" remix with Outkast and "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" with Elton John, the Backstreet Boys soon found out that Jive Records was not going to allow either of the songs to be released.
Outkast later blasted the Backstreet Boys on a TRL episode, but later apologized after word got out that it was Jive Records that scrapped their duet and not Backstreet.
Elton John took his song elsewhere. "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" was released earlier this year on the 'One Love' album by UK's Blue. The single was considered a success in several parts of the world.
Today, Jive Records continues to shaft other artists, this time around, the solo-success Justin Timberlake. Timberlake and Mariah Carey recorded a track together recently in hopes of getting it on her latest album, 'Charmbraclet'.
Shortly before the release of her album, both Timberlake and Carey were upset to find out that Jive Records was not going to allow the track to appear on her new album. She hoped to release it on an upcoming single, but Jive would not allow it either.
Mariah Carey has blasted back by posting a message on her website encouraging all fans to email Jive Records and make them allow the track to be released. Fans have been unsuccessful so far, however.
With the Backstreet lawsuit against Jive and, now, other artists taking action against the label, one must wonder if it will only be a matter of time before Jive Records is forced to change its ways, and 'give back' to the artists that have molded them into the 'big name' label they are today.
Nick & Howie Were For Bush While AJ & Kevin Were For Gore
"When the Backstreet Boys were promoting Black & Blue, they did an interview at Virgin Megastore. The interviewer asked them about the Smash Hits party, the Black & Blue tour, Westlife versus the Spice Girls, and more. More importantly, he asked them who they voted for in the 2000 U.S. Presidential election, seeing as how they're from Florida and Florida was the controversial state as far as the voting was concerned. Brian got out of answering the question. Nick and Howie said they would have voted for Republican George W. Bush. Kevin and AJ were enthusiastic about saying they were for Democrat Al Gore. Kevin then added "...because Bush is a clown."
Kevin auditioning for B'Way again
Last night I was in NYC enjoying my friend's performance in the cast of Les Miserables.
After the show, we hung out at a local club and the subject of Kevin's performance in Chicago came up.
My friend indicated to me that the buzz in the theater community is that Kevin is auditioning / already auditioned / taking a role in Jesus Christ Superstar. (my friend was not sure where Kevin was in that process).
Just wanted to pass along the info - do with it what you will.
Thanks PJ To For The Info
Kevin Richardson Going Back To School
Friday, April 11 @ 18:37:53 EDT
"According to the new Just Within Reach newsletter, Backstreet Boys star Kevin Richardson will be a part of a new environmental video watched by elementary school kids across the nation. "JWR’s Jim and Vicki Hanna recently met with National Geographic staff and video director Bob Nixon to preview the rough cut of the upcoming educational video about public lands and habitats. The video will be distributed to hundreds of 5th grade classes during the 2003-04 academic year. The video, currently about 20 minutes long, features musician and actor Kevin Richardson as host and narrator. JWR and NG are in preliminary discussions regarding the creation of an accompanying classroom curriculum guide for teachers. The video is tentatively slated for a fall release date.""

They’re great. The first time I heard the Backstreet Boys’ single on the radio I liked it and I went out and bought their CD. There is some great songwriting on that CD. I met Kevin Richardson from the Backstreet Boys at a concert. We were in the audience, we talked for a while, and he invited me to see them play. Unfortunately, I was out of town when they came through.

DMX - I'd be jealous of the Backstreet Boys when they sold more than me...The only reason you think of jealous of you [Ja Rule] is because you know you sound like me. That's common fucking sense, man. You think Backstreet Boys are jealous of N'Sunk or whatever the fuck they name is? Fuck no - they have better things to worry about...
X - ...Goin' back to Backstreet. They made their label huge and brought them in shitloads of money and now they can't record, I heard, because their label is fucking them around. I feel them. They're real mutha fuckas in their own way, but their management "team" refuses to recognize that shit. I feel those men or boys or whatever the fuck you wanna call them. We give our souls to our music. We put our lives on the fucking wax and [the labels] treat us like shit...
