Rollerball  2001

John McTiernan’s ROLLERBALL takes place in the not too distant future, and the future is fierce. A notorious renegade sport, ROLLERBALL packs arenas all over the world. A global viewership bets and roots for star players Jonathan Cross (Chris Klein), Marcus Ridley (LL Cool J) and their beautiful teammate Aurora (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) who skate and motorcycle past opponents to score. Despite the danger of the game, the real threat lies in team owner Petrovich (Jean Reno) who sacrifices anything and anyone to maximize ratings, which are worth more to him than the final score. In a heroic move, Jonathan and his teammates attempt to expose the corruption and treachery. It is a risky play and the penalty is lethal.

Rollerball Stars Meet the Press

McTiernan's droogs ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Jean Reno, Chris Klein and LL Cool J, the stars of John McTiernan's Rollerball remake, recently gathered for a Q&A session with the press. And on this encounter, one subject of media interest was of course the violent nature of the game of Rollerball. Marie-France Coallier from The Montreal Gazette was one of the reporters who attended the meeting at the Rollerball production office in Blainville, near Montreal. In her article, she quotes Reno, who plays the character Petrovich, an owner of one of the Rollerball teams, "It's quite violent, but it is a denunciation of violence. I'm just an actor. I'm wary of actors who think they're spokesmen. It's the director who should be defending the films. It's pretentious for an actor to believe he is responsible for the film's message."

Chris Klein adds, "The question regarding movies containing violence is: who's at fault? The providers or the demanders? This movie is not saying violence is good and it's not saying violence is bad. It contains violence within a story. The movie's not about the violence."

Ain't It Cool News also has a couple recent Rollerball reports. Evidently the website for French edition of Premiere magazine had their own representative at the meeting. They're now offering audio clips from LL Cool J. Among the subjects, he discusses his character, the look of the film, and the social aspects of Rollerball. And over at the Unofficial Rollerball Website, you can check out a couple spy photos of the arena which was build inside an old cement factory, and one of the film's autos.

Two more items. First, in a report at Dark Horizons, an informant relays word of the production having recently set up shop in his hometown of Lethbridge, Alberta. And second, If you haven't already done so, stop on by the official Rollerball website. It now features Flash animation and a recruitment ad for the IRBF (International Rollerball Federation). They're accepting applications for players, trainers, mechanics and announcers.
