Rollerball  2001

John McTiernan’s ROLLERBALL takes place in the not too distant future, and the future is fierce. A notorious renegade sport, ROLLERBALL packs arenas all over the world. A global viewership bets and roots for star players Jonathan Cross (Chris Klein), Marcus Ridley (LL Cool J) and their beautiful teammate Aurora (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) who skate and motorcycle past opponents to score. Despite the danger of the game, the real threat lies in team owner Petrovich (Jean Reno) who sacrifices anything and anyone to maximize ratings, which are worth more to him than the final score. In a heroic move, Jonathan and his teammates attempt to expose the corruption and treachery. It is a risky play and the penalty is lethal.

Rollerball Rolls Forward

MGM deals and McTiernan gears up for the hockey game from hell.

With reports from Variety, The Montreal Gazzette, Billboard and Mr. Showbiz, in addition to two recent MGM press releases, it appears progress on John McTiernan's remake of Rollerball is rolling full speed ahead. MGM is setting their sights on this $85 million dollar production as their key offering for the summer of 2001.

On the casting front, except for Chris Klein (Election, American Pie) and LL Cool J (Kingdom Come, Any Given Sunday, In Too Deep, Deep Blue Sea) who signed on months ago to star as Rollerball team members, casting for the film is still being finalized. The latest news is Jean Reno (Ronin, The Professional) will step into the picture as the team's villainous owner. Billboard reports Reno is currently in final negotiations.

On the production front, McTiernan has been scouting locations in Canada, the U.S. and Europe for the past couple months, looking for the perfect venue in which to stage the deadly game. And now it appears that instead of using an existing arena, the production will build their own near Montreal. He tells Mr. Showbiz "I want a building where what you're going to see feels illicit, what you're going to see feels immoral and spooky." Offering his thoughts on the original and his plan for the remake, "We thought we were going to see the hockey game from hell, and instead it was science fiction sociology. I just am going back and pulling that stuff out. The studio had a rewrite that had even more nonsense about explaining a world where people get hurt regularly so other people can get money from others watching them get hurt. It's my premise [that] you don't have to go into the future, into this never-never land for that situation." Principal photography for Rollerball is scheduled to start in July in Montreal.

In putting together financing for the production, John McTiernan and MGM executives have been shopping the film at Cannes this week. And it appears their efforts have paid off. MGM has announced they will combine forces with Atlas Entertainment, the company that financed such films as Twelve Monkeys, City of Angels, and Three Kings. Utilizing Atlas Entertainment's alliance with Helkon Media and Toho-Towa, MGM and Atlas will co-finance future motion pictures (Rollerball being the first), with MGM controlling marketing and distribution in North America. Atlas' Chief Operating Office, Charles Roven, comments "It is great to be in business with MGM and we are thrilled to create an alliance with this global template. There are no limits to the opportunities ahead. Toho-Towa, Helkon and Atlas are delighted that the first film from this new relationship is John McTiernan's Rollerball. Atlas President, Allen Shapiro offered "Rollerball is exactly the high concept project aimed at a global audience that we were hoping would come from this venture and we consider ourselves lucky to be working with such an esteemed filmmaker."

Two more Rollerball-related agreements have also recently transpired. In looking for an additional international distributor for the film, Variety reported yesterday that Columbia TriStar is close to wrapping up a deal with MGM. The deal is Columbia Tri-Star will handle international territories with the exception of Germany, Japan and Italy. Additionally, Showtime has also entered into an exclusive broadcast arrangement with MGM. The agreement includes broadcast rights for the existing MGM film library in addition to Rollerball.
