Rollerball  2001

John McTiernan’s ROLLERBALL takes place in the not too distant future, and the future is fierce. A notorious renegade sport, ROLLERBALL packs arenas all over the world. A global viewership bets and roots for star players Jonathan Cross (Chris Klein), Marcus Ridley (LL Cool J) and their beautiful teammate Aurora (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) who skate and motorcycle past opponents to score. Despite the danger of the game, the real threat lies in team owner Petrovich (Jean Reno) who sacrifices anything and anyone to maximize ratings, which are worth more to him than the final score. In a heroic move, Jonathan and his teammates attempt to expose the corruption and treachery. It is a risky play and the penalty is lethal.

Rollerball Teaser Trailer Time

Dominated by one, controlled by a few, watched by all...

For their first update, the webmasters of Rollerball's official site have rolled out the film's teaser trailer. This quick glimpse at John McTiernan's remake begins in blackness with the sound of an approaching steel rollerball. The revolving sound underscores the titles: "In the not too distant future... when nations fight over... money... power... freedom... their weapon will be... a 7 pound steel ball." The accelerating CGI sphere then heads right into the center of the screen and we're blasted into a series of shots linked by the unified stomp of the crowd and players.

Scenes from the film constitute pretty much only the second half of the trailer, but the quick shots of the game's action look pretty wild. It's LL Cool J, Chris Klein, Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, et al. in action. And as the official site showcases, there are "big hits." The teaser then slams with the closer "GO BALLISTIC!"

Also added to the official site's main page is another photo and story about Zhambal Horseman star Jonathan Cross (Chris Klein). Concerning a rumored trade to the Marauders, Cross tells Rollerball.com, "I would be a mad man to trade what I have going for me here. We plan to take this team to the post season championship meet and bring home the trophy."

Right now the standing release date for Rollerball is June 1. Given the poster and trailers' "Summer 2001" statement, it's obvious there's a possibility it'll change.

One wonders what the "92" under Aurora's eye represents. 92 wins, or maybe 92 kills?
