**ALL THAT GLITTERS UPDATES
Release Date: TBA 2001
Release Date Note: The latest news item about this movie was a MTV article
dated 12/1/99, and it mentioned that this film was being slated for
Summer, 2000. However, filming hasn't yet started, so that makes the
Summer highly unlikely at this point (2/28/00). I will note that an
earlier article in USA Today a month earlier [11/2/99] listed Christmas,
2000. So, perhaps we can interpret that to mean they were aiming for
summer, but had December in mind if that didn't work out? Regardless, both
articles are linked below, so you can see what I mean. (3/7/00) Sony now
has this film for release sometime in 2001.
Distributor: Columbia Pictures.
Cast: Mariah Carey; other cast not yet announced (though one possibility
may be the director, Vondie Curtis-Hall, who is also well-known as an
actor)
Director: Vondie Curtis-Hall (Gridlock'd)
Screenwriters: This one crucial detail is the thing that none of the
articles about the film seem to mention (yet), but if they're going to
start filming in just a few weeks, there must be a script, right? (2/1/00)
Okay, well, as you can see below, there is a site that purports to have
the script for this film, or at least a draft from July, 1999. If this is
the draft, it is credited to three initials (K.L., M.C., and S.G.). "M.C."
could of course be Mariah Carey. Or not. The only name credited is the
K.L., Kate Lanier (cowriter of The Mod Squad, Set it Off, and What's Love
Got to Do With It?). Please note that this script has not been confirmed
as being valid, and that the screenwriting credits remain unconfirmed as
well.
Based upon: A story idea conceived by Mariah Carey, though it is not
intended to be perceived as autobiographical.
Premise: A young singer (Carey) who grew up in the projects after she was
abandoned by her mother gets her big break when a DJ hears her demo tape
(which also leads to a relationship). The film takes place in the New York
club scene of the early 1980's, and the singer is a member of an all-girls
group.
Music Note: Obviously, Ms. Carey will be providing the music for the film
(to be produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who also produced her latest
album, Rainbow), she is producing the soundtrack and providing at least 6
tracks of her own to the album. What is known is that she intends to go on
a big worldwide tour after the film is released in support of it (and the
likely hit soundtrack).
Filming: Production is expected to start on this movie sometime in
mid-2000, but no dates have yet been announced.
Genres: Drama, Musical, Romance
Article about Mariah's Future: USA Today (has a good deal about the
project and Mariah's thoughts about it)
Announcement of Production: MTV (From 12/1/99, this appears to be the most
recent article)
Possible Script: glitters.org (Note: This draft, dated as July of 1999,
may or may not be the actual script. I haven't read it, and probably
won't, but I will say that this site seems to load very slowly, so if you
want to read this script... it may take a while.)
Thanks to IMCO.com for that article.
