Selena: DoRe'S Community Site

Selena....She was definitely hot. A true star who rose to the top, she could make any stage sizzle with her powerful performances.

She was born in Lake Jackson, Texas. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., a former member of the original "Los Dinos", provided a loving family, a home, and a musically nourishing environment for Selena. She began her professional career at nine years of age. Although the first few months were quite difficult, Selena was making great strides toward becoming an established artist. Her following was loyal and growing.

In 1981, with her father's help, Selena organized her own band and to follow family tradition named the band "Selena Y Los Dinos". Their first recording came in 1983. That recording session was followed by many others for various smaller labels. Although these recordings didn't spawn a definite hit, they served to lay a strong foundation for Selena's musical career.

Selena savored her first success in 1986 when she received the "Female Vocalist Of The Year" and "Performer Of The Year" awards at the Tejano Music Awards. Since then she has been among the top winners, taking awards in numerous categories year after year.

In the 1993 and 94 Premio Lo Nuestro, Selena received awards in the categories of Regional Mexican; "Female Singer Of The Year", "Song Of The Year", and "Album Of The Year", for her recording, 'Entra A Mi Mundo'.

Most recently, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences awarded Selena with a Grammy in the category of Best Mexican/American Album for her recording 'Selena Live'. It was her first year being nominated by the N.A.R.A.S.

Among her many Gold and Platinum album awards, Selena recently was recognized with a Double Platinum award for her recording, 'Selena Live' and Quadruple Platinum for her most recent recording 'Amor Prohibido'. She was bestowed these awards during the 1994 convention of Radio & Musica in Los Angeles, California.

Selena's career continued to cross boundaries by leaps and bounds as she had signed a worldwide English-language recording contract with SBK (sister label to EMI Latin). Selena became the first female crossover Latin artist signed to SBK.

Selena's last two albums for EMI Latin have sold nearly one million units in the United States. In Mexico she has sold over half a million. Selena's fifth Spanish-language album, 'Amor Prohibido', released in March has already sold half a million units.

Selena's talents knew no limits. She was completely involved in every performance, reaching deep into her emotions and delivering power-packed songs adorned with her stylistic choreography. It comes as no surprise that Selena has become a favorite performer in the United States and Mexico. Now, sadly for us, Selena is performing before an audience of angels, but her music will forever remain in our hearts.
