~ Prologue ~

~Flashback~

9:17 PM, Just outside Santa Rosa, CA; Christmas Eve, 1982.

A woman sits down in a rocking chair, next to a fireplace while looking at some photos. She sighs and throws them into the fireplace, save one. The photo is of her family. It shows her loving husband; two blond-haired children, a boy and a girl; herself and three dark-haired children, twin toddlers (a boy and a girl) and a slightly older boy. All were sitting on the front steps of a house. She takes this last photo and holds it over the fire, lighting it on fire. Walking over to a large bay window where a beautifully decorated Christmas tree sits glowing, she sets the flaming picture on one of the many presents surrounding the tree. She walks back over to the rocking chair and sits down, sipping a glass of wine. Soon, the whole room is ablaze and fire is quickly spreading to the grand, old staircase.

9:45 PM, That same night.

Smoke fills the hallway as a young dark-haired boy, five or so, crawls down the hallway, blue eyes glinting in the flickering light coming from the many rooms on fire around him. Screaming for his family, he is stopped by something rubbery and looks up, only to see a demonesqe figure emerge from the smoke ahead of him with . . . with . . . Could it be? Yes, yes, it is. It has a trunk, almost like an elephant's trunk!! And it, to the little boy's dismay, had a hold of his baby sister!" What are you doing to my sister!?! NO!!!!" the boy screams as he realizes the trunk demon is coming . . . for him.

~End Flashback~

2:23 AM, The Plaza Hotel, Chicago, IL; February 18, 2000.

"SIGH!!!" The young man screams as he wakes up from yet another torturous nightmare. He gets up out of bed and enters the bathroom. "Why is this happening to me?" he whispers while running a hand through his dark hair. Turning on the light reveals just how bad the nightmare was. There are dark circles under his deep blue eyes. Normally the color of the North Atlantic on a bright, sunny day, they are now dark and stormy, clouded with misery and fear.

"Babes, what's wrong? You ok? Too much partying tonight for ya?" his girlfriend calls from the bed saucily.

"No, baby, I--I just had another nightmare, that's all," he calls back and sighs.

"Oh, GAWD! Not again! Can't you take something for that!?!" she says disgustedly while rolling over and putting a pillow over her head, knowing full well what the rest of the night is going to be like.

"I wish," he whispers while lying back down and falling into more nightmares.
