Chapter 12

"Hey hun." Brian said sitting down on her bed. She was lying down, not facing him. "I hit Kevin in the leg." Patrice whispered; if she would have tried to talk any louder she would have began to cry. "I heard, but don't worry, he isn't that mad." Brian said trying to comfort her. "Where did you go? I would have liked to at least known they were coming", she said. "You didn't get my note?" Brian asked.

"What note?" Patrice asked facing him.

"The note I left you this morning, the one that said I went to go see my mother". He said.

Patrice flinched. "Did she tell you to get rid of me? I will go if you want…" she trailed off.

"NO! I mean no, I don't want you to go anywhere, and I just went to hear her side." Brian explained.

Patrice rolled her eyes and turned away from him again.

"Don't be that way Patrice, I just had to do that," he tried to explain further.

If Patrice was listening she wasn't it showing it. She remained completely silent. 'I need another Valium' she though to herself.

"Are you mad at me?" Brian asked sounding child like.

"No" she said.

"Then why won't you look at me?" He asked sounding wounded.

Patrice sat up and faced him. Brian noticed she had been crying. All he could do was put his arms around her. "I was so scared!" she sobbed into his chest. He just held her. How could he ever make her feel safe? She was always ready to run. "I'm sorry_,” he whispered into her hair. "I love you," he said, kissing her cheek. "No you don't," she contested. Brian gulped and then licked his lips. "Patrice, I do love you." He was determined to argue his point. Patrice moved out of his arms. "Please don't leave me," he said. Patrice saw the desperation in his eyes, the want. She stayed, but kept a few inches a distance between them. "You love me?" Patrice snorted. "I do. " he said taking her hand in his. Patrice looked down at the flowery patterned bedspread. She couldn't hold eye contact, she was afraid.

Brian tried to silence his heart that was beating out of control. "Do you love me?" he asked, needing to hear it. "Do you care for me?"

Patrice wanted to scream, "Yes Brian I love you!" she wanted to climb a mountain and scream it out loud. She wanted so much to trust Brian, to let him love her. "I love you,” she whispered. Brian thought he didn't hear her right. He was already preparing himself for rejection. His smiled widely. "Do you really?" he asked. "Yes." She said louder. Brian couldn't control himself. He grabbed Patrice's head in his hand and kissed her deeply. Letting his tongue linger in her mouth. Patrice's body stiffened, but quickly relaxed. She couldn't believe this was happening. She thought that when he left for Orlando all those years ago that would be the last time she ever felt his velvety lips on hers. But here she was, and here he was kissing her with searing passion. "I love you." He said, reminding her in case she had forgotten. Patrice let out a sob. Happiness, she was so happy she couldn't help but cry. Their passion was going to a whole new level as Brian removed her shirt. Soon they were both naked; the mere friction alone was enough to hold their fiery want at bay. They moved together, wanting to take that final plunge. Brian placed his member at her opening, looking for some sign of approval her. Patrice placed her hands on his shoulders.

"Wait, wait a minute." She pleaded.

Brian groaned but stared into her deep green orbs.

"Please don't hurt me," she pleaded.

"But you have done this before" Brian said slightly confused.

"No, I mean don't ever hurt me, don't leave me, don't forget me again." She said, some of the old pain in her heart leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.

Brian kissed her sweetly on the lips, "I promise." He said before entering her.

After hours of love making Patrice slept soundly in Brian's arms. The rise and fall of her chest against his was enough to keep him content for the rest of his life. He was slipping into sleep when the phone rang.

"Hello?" Brian answered.

"I see you couldn't be happy until you got her back in your bed." The harsh whisper said.

Brian cringed, "What do you want mother?" He asked.

"Do I have to hurt her again Honey? Is that what you want?" She threatened.

"Leave us alone!" Brian whispered into the phone, turning to make sure Patrice was asleep.

"I can't leave you alone baby, I am your mother,” she said. She sounded drunk.

"Good night mom." Brian said hanging up.

His mother couldn't be serious. She wasn't that crazed. Was she?
