Hi everyone.....welcome to "My Favourite Movies" page. As a movie fan I could probably go on for ages talking about every film that I love. But to spare you the agony of listening to that midi playing forever, I will mention just my Top 5 of all time.

As I said before, I am a big movie fan, and being such a person I have to exclude many a grand flick from this page. Movies such as the Star Wars and Back To The Future trilogies, Titanic and any other big budget movies I will leave out for now. As I consider them all grand "spectacles" rather than normal movies.

The movies I talk about here are my personal favourites...and nobody elses. For that reason I do not state that they are the best movies ever made, or the highest money earners or even the best stories! They are just movies that have touched me on a personal level, hence they have become my favourites.
Maybe you might like them too.

..................................................................

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is number 1 on my list. It was a glorious time of movie going back then. Star Wars, Grease, Alien, Saturday Night Fever were all around that time. They all dazzled me! But being a kid of 14 years old, and well into UFOs, space and aliens, I had one of those typical boyhood fantasies about meeting up with ETs. Close Encounters provided the perfect fantasy for me at the time. I had never left a theatre before wanting so much to be in the film itself. I wasn't that impressed with the "Special Edition" version that came out 3 years later, but the original still remains true to me everytime I watch it again.

After Close Encounters, it's always a toss up what comes next on my list. So I will go through them all now in no particular order.
An Officer and a Gentleman was a feel good movie for me. I once heard a critic say it was "the best movie to come out of Hollywood without special effects"...I think he got it right. Richard Gere, David Keith, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr at their finest. Good story, nice song and a sweet ending. I was one step away from joining the Navy!

Then there was The World According To Garp. Robin Williams's first serious role, but it contained some really funny scenes. John Lithgow's performance earned him an Oscar nomination as the sex-changed Roberta, along with Glenn Close and Mary Beth Hurt. This film delivered a real emotional "clout" to me and it is one I never get tired of watching.

Excalibur is a movie that continues to grow upon me every time I see it. There is always a new line or scene I marvel at with each viewing. King Arthur and Camelot have never looked so good (in it's own bloody realistic way). I love the chivalry and honour that themes this movie along with it's classic noble dialogue. As far as swords and sorcery go - this one is the best!

As you've probably noticed, all these movies have been around the same time frame...from about 1978 to 1983. You can tell when I truly loved going to the movies! Not too many films these days have touched me as much as those earlier ones. Not until I saw Contact just recently. It just inches out Fame. If anything, Contact was like an updated version of Close Encounters for me. Once again I got those feelings like I did in 1978, to be part of the movie experience. I wonder if it was just a coincidence that Robert Zemeckis directed this flick. He was a protege of Steven Spielberg. Good to see he passed on his magic!

Well, there you have it. The movies that make me tick! Please drop me a line if you have any comments about my comments....good or bad. It's always good to hear the opinion of others. So, until I see a movie that totally grabs me, I will say goodbye for now!
