You certainly won't get high on second-hand hash smoke at an Aaron Carter show, but you might pass out from the screaming.

Aaron stepped out from his big brother's shadow Thursday night, delivering a 45-minute set to about 7,000 delirious fans at Halifax Metro Centre, kicking off his Canadian tour.

The 11-year-old, who opened for older brother Nick Carter's Backstreet Boys last summer in Halifax, bounced onto the stage in a yellow and black racing suit with dancers Darryl and Keith.

In his first show as a headliner, Aaron seemed impressed with the turnout.

"It's really great to be here right now," he said to ear-splitting screams.

"You know, I think this is the biggest outing that's ever been."

Chants of "Aaron! Aaron!" filled the Metro Centre before show time, with any movement backstage causing the four- to 15-year-old crowd to erupt.

The Metro Centre ushers seemed to have more trouble calming the kids on the floor than with fans at last week's Tragically Hip concert.

Four security guards, noticeably less beefy than the hulking Hip squad of 15 or 20, were on hand to make sure no one jumped the barricades.

But that didn't quell the young crowd's anticipation.

Minutes before the 7 p.m. start, a pony tailed 12-year-old girl exclaimed: "This is, oh my God, I'm gonna die! 6:51!"

Another little guy, about six, kept twisting in his seat and asking his mom, "How many more minutes?"

Aaron didn't disappoint, with his energetic, bubble-gum pop in familiar songs like Crazy Little Party Girl, One Bad Apple and Crush on You (a hit for The Jets in the mid-'80s).

And with generous amounts of help from pre-recorded backing tracks, Aaron got the Metro Centre crowd on its feet.

Even though his young, sometimes shaky voice showed some flat patches, the crowd didn't care. They wailed and grooved along as he cart wheeled, ran and danced around the stage.

The large crowd even gave a warm welcome to yet another singing member of the Carter family.

Older sister Leslie came on in the middle of Aaron's set to perform her own song, much in the same bouncy vein as her brothers' music.

For his encore, Aaron reappeared in a white puffy shirt and baggy gold pants that looked like they'd fit Nick a little better.

Canadian vocal group VIP was also a hit as opener for Aaron.

The Ontario twenty somethings performed a brisk 25-minute set, closing with their hit It's Just My Luck.
