    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

    by Joe Morales

Our hot and humid summertime has arrived here in Miami and June 1st also marked the beginning of the Hurricane Season. It is time for us Miamians to hibernate in our air-conditioned monolithic concrete structures!

I know that this is getting old, but we really need your help regarding the submission of articles, announcements and photos for our Newsletter. We would have to feature some of your personal commemorative bottle collections in our future issues. All we need is some photos of your collection and a few words about how you got started, plus any other information you may want to supply. Also, please supply us with any information regarding Coca-Cola related events in your area. These events do not necessarily have to involve only bottles. Most of us bottle collectors also collect other Coca-Cola memorabilia.

Have a super summer and a Happy Fourth of July Holiday. I know that those of you that are attending the TCCCC National Convention in Chicago will really enjoy it. Having been on the National Board when the site was selected, I know from personal inspection that the hotel is very well suited for our National Convention.

    Sincerely, Joe

    Vice President’s Report

    Ken’s Korner

    Hi Everyone,

What a great summer this had been so far in our area! The weather has been unseasonably cool with just a few warm days. I expect that to change very soon but am enjoying it while it lasts. The season has brought a few tornados that caused some problems. We’ve almost come to expect them anymore. I hope no one has had any major problems with the weather in your area.

We are packing to leave for the Coca-Cola show in Pigeon Forge. We really like to visit that part of the US. I hope some of you will be there. We will be going to Chicago in July. We always enjoy the shows because we get to see some of our friends that we have come to know through the years. A side benefit is that sometimes I find a bottle or item I can’t live without. You know what I’m talking about.

We are in the process of packing to move. You never realize how much Coke stuff & stuff you have accumulated until you have to pack it all. Then & only then do you wish someone else had all your stuff. That thought soon passes & then you are ready to display the Coke items again.

Our membership would love to hear about your collection, special or unusual bottles you have found & the story behind the find or maybe how you got started collecting. It is tough trying to find enough articles to fill your newsletter that are interesting. We need your help. Please write us.

Here are the new bottles that I know about since the last newsletter. Let me know if I missed any.

COMMEMORATIVE COCA-COLA BOTTLES AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL

When I first started collecting Commemorative Coca-Cola bottles, I was originally drawn to them by their beautiful artwork. As the years passed though, I was fascinated by how informative and educational my hobby had become.

For instance, there is Mix Guide bottle #323, honoring Crawford W. Long. Crawford W. Long discovered anesthesia in 1842 and has a museum in his honor in the small city of Jefferson, Georgia, located between Athens and Gainesville. I made it a point to visit the museum and it is a very worthwhile stop. The movie classic Gone With the Wind was filmed in Clayton County, Georgia and the Kiwanis Club of Jonesboro, GA produced a fund raiser bottle in 1993 (#389). The famous plantation home in the movie ‘Tara’ is depicted on the face of the bottle. In 1994, the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of the Western Pacific island of Guam was commemorated – "July 21, 1944 to July 21, 1994". Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Marianas Archipelagos and was formally claimed by Spain in 1565. Many of you may not have realized that after the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the United States. Guam was occupied by the Japanese from 1941 until it was liberated by American military forces on July 21, 1944. Today, Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States, and their people have been U.S. Citizens since 1950.

As far as charitable organizations go, there have been countless bottles issued for Ronald McDonald Houses throughout the U.S.A. The artwork on the majority of these bottles is very attractive. Two of the most attractive bottles in this series were done by the Ronald McDonald House in Hawaii (#663/1995 and #765/1996). The 1995 Edition has a Blue, Yellow & White Lei featured on the neck with the words ‘Ka Hale Pulama 1995" (House of Hope 1995).

In addition to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, many other organizations have been featured, such as: Junior League of Fort Smith, Arkansas, #474; Cobb County (GA) Humane Society #’s 445 & 718; Rotary International, #516; Easter Seal Society of Virginia, #’s 605 & 841; Kikis Kids Camp (Youth with Diabetes), #1004; Rome, Georgia, Jaycees #406; Knights Templar Eye Foundation (Charles P. Taylor), #’s 438 & 439; Dare to Care, #731; Rainbow House – Emergency Shelter for Children, #1050; and in 2001, the United Way of America bottle. I know that I would not have been aware of some of those fine charities if it had not been for my hobby of collecting Commemorative Coca-Cola bottles.

In 1996, the city of Bemidji, Minnesota issued a bottle celebrating their Centennial. (#704) Bemidji is known as the ‘First City in the Mississippi’, as this is where the famous Mississippi River originates. I bet a lot of you didn’t know that until this bottle was issued. (I didn’t).

One of my favorites is #756, issued in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in honor of Judge Isaac C. Parker – known as ‘The Hanging Judge’. During my last visit to Fort Smith, I went and saw the famous gallows where all the hangings took place. Weird feeling.

Of particular interest to me was the bottle issued to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Miami, Florida – ‘Miami Centennial ‘96’. It is interesting to realize just how young a city Miami is – it would certainly never had flourished as much as it has without the advent of air-conditioning. It was also scary to realize that I had lived in Miami for 50 of its first 100 years!

A bottle that I found interesting was the #777 ‘ SYS-TAO’ bottle done in Great Plains, Oklahoma. The letters ‘SYS-TAO’ appear on the bottle in gold oriental style lettering. The letters stand for ‘Staple Your Self To An Order’ and we understand that the oriental style lettering was because of the Chinese word ‘TAO’, which means ‘Way’. Taoism teaches that happiness can be acquired through obedience to the requirements of man’s nature, in accordance with the TAO or Way, the basic, principle of all nature.

In 1996, the Sydney 2000 Olympics bottle ‘Team Millennium Partner’ (#787) was issued and symbolized the passing of the Olympics from Atlanta, GA to Sydney, Australia. This beautiful 6-color bottle features the five Olympic rings, which represent some of the continents of the world: Africa, Asia, the ‘America’s’, Australia, and Europe.

Another bottle that interested me was #833 – commemorating the 15th anniversary of ‘The Conch Republic’ in the Florida Keys.

The Conch Republic is a sort of whimsical independent Republic originally formed by residents of Key West. It has its own elected President and other Officials. The ‘Republic’ periodically threatens to secede from the United States and/or the State of Florida whenever it feels that their policies threaten the interests of the ‘Fabulous Florida Keys’.

In 1998, there was a beautiful 7-color bottle done for Mardi Gras (#1013). One of its features was a Coca-Cola button with a Jester hat to the left, done in Purple, Gold and Green. These are the traditional Mardi Gras colors with Purple representing ‘Justice’, Gold representing ‘Power’ and Green representing ‘Faith’. Another interesting bottle is the Shorter College 125th Anniversary Commemorative, (#1060) also done in 1998. Shorter College was conceived in the mind of educator and Rome (Georgia) Baptist Church Pastor Luther Rice Gwaltney, in 1873. When it originally opened it was known as the Cherokee Baptist Female College but later changed its name to Shorter College when it began admitting male students. Many of you know of the famous Varsity Restaurant in Atlanta, founded by Frank Gordy. Until the Varsity bottle was issued in 1998, #1088, I didn’t realize that it had opened in 1928 and was celebrating its 70th Anniversary. It is a fun place to go to although the whole process of ordering your meal can be a bit intimidating. You better know what you want when you approach the order counter! Enough said.

In 1999, a very special bottle was done to commemorate the wedding of Richard and Kelli Mix. A white oval in the center contains little, blue wedding with ‘Richard & Kelli’ above and ‘October 30, 1999’ below. Can you believe that they will have been married four years as of this coming October? Seems like it was just the other day….

Over the years, some bottles have been issued to honor some very special people associated with The Coca-Cola Company. In 1996, a bottle was issued for ‘George C. Snyder Day’, honoring the founder of the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Charlotte, N.C. (#741). Also, in 1996, bottle #795 was issued to honor W. S. Heath and his 60 years of service with Carolina Coca-Cola in Sumter, South Carolina. In 1997, a bottle was issued to dedicate the opening of the Roberto C. Goizueta (Emory) Business School, named after the former President of The Coca-Cola Company. Speaking of special bottles, a VERY special bottle was issued in 1998 to honor our own Bottle Chapter member Fred C. Kirkpatrick. The bottle honors Fred for his 60 years of service with The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Fred is just a super person and has done a lot to assist the Arkansas Chapter of TCCCC. Other bottles in this series include one issued in the year 2000 for Jim Stuart, a VP of Marketing with a Coca-Cola Bottlers Association, and the Wally Hardman retirement bottle produced in 2001 in Salt Lake City.

As far as ‘sports’ go, I think anything that has occurred in the Sports Arena over the last ten years has been immortalized on Coca-Cola bottles. I believe you can learn more about all sports and who won what by just studying your bottle collection. Forget Sports Illustrated – these are literally hundreds of sports oriented bottles. My daughter Mindy impresses her male friends with her knowledge of sports memorabilia and she of course doesn’t let on as to where she learned it all!

The information in this brief article is really just the tip of the iceberg. There are well over 1,000 commemorative 8 oz. bottles and some 278 10 oz. bottles. You could spend months researching the background of each one that is issued. With the advent of the Internet and search engines like www.google.com, it is now possible to find out almost anything about everything! I do enjoy the hunt and collecting the bottles. However, when I am not our ‘hunting’, I find the researching fascinating…. and educational.

    COCA-COLA TIDBITS

Thinking that two C’s would look well in advertising, creator and pharmacist John Stith Pemberton’s partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, suggested the name "Coca-Cola" and penned the now-famous trademark in his unique, flowing scripts. Sales the first year averaged nine drinks per day.

On January 31, 1893, the trademark Coca-Cola was first registered in the United States Patent Office.

Large-scale bottling was made possible in 1899 when two men from Chattanooga, Tennessee, secured from Asa Candler the exclusive rights to bottle and sell Coca-Cola in practically the entire United States. Their efforts laid the groundwork for today’s worldwide network of bottling companies.

In 1923, the six-bottle cardboard carton was introduced. Described as a "home package with a handle of invitation," the carton offered consumers a convenient way to carry their favorite beverage home to their families.

Coca-Cola Beach is located in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, on the Atlantic side. People in the town gave the beach this name more than 40 years ago because it was located in front of a small Coca-Cola bottling plant. The bottling plant is no longer there, but the beach has kept its name.
