Brian and Kevin had decided to tag along on Nick's bus for a while because they had seen the younger man slowly crawl into a shell. He wasn't quite as outgoing as he used to be and noticeably less energetic.
Kevin joined Brian on the couch across from where Nick sat with his guitar.
"What are you up to Nicky?" Kevin asked.
"I just asked him Kevin." Brian said giving Kevin an annoyed look.
"Sorry if I wasn't here!"
"I just finished writing a song guys." Nick spoke up but barely.
"Cool. Can we hear it?" Brian asked.
"Sure." Nick said.
Kevin and Brian sat back on the couch and got comfortable before Nick started playing.
As soon as Nick started playing the first few notes, his eyes closed and a look of concentration came over him. Soon, his lips slowly opened to begin softly singing the first verse.
"I used to think
I had the answers to everything
But now I know
That life doesn't always go my way... yeah
Feels like I'm caught in the middle
That's when I realized
I'm not a boy

As he finished singing the first verse and chorus, a couple of tears fell from his eyes before he began singing again, this time with even more passion in his voice.
"There is no need to protect me

So don't tell me to shut my eyes
I'm not a boy

While I'm in between

By this time, his tears were overflowing freely and his eyes were open, staring at Kevin and Brian.
"But if you look at me closely
You will see it in my eyes
This boy will always find
His way"
Nick's eyes never left the two men in front of him as his lyrics sank into them. They might not have known this, but he had written this song for them. They had always treated him like a child, even after turning 21.
"I'm not a boy don't tell me what to believe
I'm just trying to find the man in me, yeah
All I need is time that's mine while I'm in between
I'm not a boy
Not yet a man

I'm not a boy"
He kept playing softly for a few seconds then let out the last line.
"Not yet a man."
As soon as he was done, he wiped his cheeks with the back of his hand and left the two men alone.
Kevin and Brian just stared into space, suddenly aware that a lot of their actions were inappropriate. Nick didn't need to be protected and treated like a child... he just needed to be loved.
