Why should the churches be any different from the rest of the world? The Bible speaks of good and evil, divisions in the church, people trying to please man rather than God.

When and why was the observance of the Sabbath day changed? During the first few centuries AD, the church was trying to find a way to bring in individuals of other beliefs. In order to do that, they thought of different techniques to get the people through their doors. One of them was to allow images to be placed in the church to make them feel more comfortable. Since they had allowed images to be placed in the church, they also decided to recognize the traditional Sunday worship by those that had other beliefs.

Let all the judges and town people, and the occupation of all trades rest on the venerable day of the sun.

Emperor Constantine, yielded to the suggestion of church on Sunday and passed the first Sunday law back in 321AD. The records state:

"Let all the judges and town people, and the occupation of all trades rest on the venerable day of the sun." Edict of March 7, 321AD Corpus Juris Civilis Cod., lib. 3, tit. 12, Lex. 3.

According to The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, pg 50, third edition, during the Council of Laodicea, the solemnity was transferred from Saturday to Sunday back in 324AD.

Because of the Emperor's submission, some Christians compromised and others paid the penalty. God had predicted this would happen.

Daniel 7:25

25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

During that time, Bibles became forbidden by the priests. As time passed, the people forgot about the Sabbath day of the Lord being on Saturday. The festival came to be regarded as the "Lord's Day", by Pope Sylvester (314-337AD).

When Jesus died, spices and ointments were prepared for his burial and they rested on the Sabbath day, according to God's commandment. (Luke 23:56) Now let's take a look at the beginning of the next chapter.

Luke 24:1

1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

Remember these are followers of Jesus and the Sunday law didn't go into effect until 321AD. During the time of Jesus' death, the Sabbath day was still being observed on Saturday the 7th day of the week.

Is it really that important that man changed God's law? Here are some scriptures, you decide!

Some Scripture References For The Sabbath Day

Exodus 20:8, 11

Exodus 31:15

Exodus 35:3

Numbers 15:32-35

Nehemiah 13:15-19

Jeremiah 17:21-27

Summary:

During the first few centuries when the church was trying to bring people of other beliefs into the church, they by doing so, compromised their own beliefs. They allowed other forms of worship into the church. In compromising, they began to ignore God's first commandment and second commandment about having no other gods before him, and making graven images. (Exodus 20:3-5)

Since bringing in the images worked so well, Emperor Constantine passed a Sunday law, on March 7, 321AD, to appease the church. This in turn caused the church to ignore God's fourth commandment about keeping the Sabbath day holy. (Exodus 20:8-11)

Over time, people became silent about man ignoring the commandments, because of the trouble that would, and did develop. Man was trying to please man instead of God. But, there were still a few that continued to follow God's commandments even after the law was passed. They left the church and continued to follow God's commandments. (1 John 2:19)

The change took place centuries after the crucifixion of Jesus. During the life of Jesus, Saturday was considered the Sabbath day.

Genesis 1:5 speaks of the evening and the morning being the first day, which brings up another interesting question. During the days of Jesus, sunset began a new day. Which means that Friday evening actually starts the Sabbath day and it continues until Saturday at sunset. The Jews of today still observe night and day as the Bible states. Who changed the clock? Oh well, that's another quest!

Psalms 40:4

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
