Growing up, I was lead to believe that God was part of a trinity like a group or trio, God being the Father, Jesus Christ as the Son, and the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost) as it is called in the New Testament. God is in heaven assisted by Jesus and the Holy Spirit whom God
created. Then one day I looked up the meaning of trinity.
According to the dictionary, trinity is a noun that means - union of one Godhead of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; (i.e.) any combination of three people or things as one. At that point I became confused. God is the Father of all creations so how can He create himself and
be three people in one? Jesus has always been mentioned as the Son that man killed. How can we kill God? I've always understood the Holy Ghost to be an energy, power, or a force created by God.
Did I discover something new that I never understood by looking up the word trinity in the dictionary? Yes! Those religious sects that teach trinitarianism are ignoring what is stated in the Bible. In the Old Testament it states that there is only one God. (Deu 6:4) In the New
Testament Jesus repeats the scripture from the book of Deuteronomy that the Lord our God is one Lord. (Mrk 12:29, 32)
God appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the name JEHOVAH. (Exo 6:3) In the psalm of Asaph men knew that JEHOVAH is the most high over the earth. (Psa 83:18) Psalm 113 says that we should praise the Lord our God. We should praise his name
from the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same. It doesn't say we should praise his names, God (Jehovah), the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit (which has no name), as one God.
Jesus is the mediator between God and men. (I Tim 2:5) There is salvation in no other; for there is no other name given whereby we can be saved. (Act 4:12) Jesus instructed us that our prayers go out to God (Jehovah), in Jesus Christ's name, who is the one to mediate the
prayers to God. (Joh 16:23 - 24) The Holy Spirit is an energy, power, or force that God bestows upon us. (Act 2:18) Time to take a look at the scriptures more closely!
Mark 12:29, 32
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou has said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
In verse twenty-nine Jesus said there is only one Lord. He did not say there are three and I am one of them. In verse thirty-two the scribe agreed with what Jesus had just stated to the individuals that were asking him questions. If there was a belief of more than one God the
scribe would have disagreed with his response and that belief would have been stated in the Old Testament or New Testament.
I Tim 2:5
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
This scripture also plainly states there is one God. It also states that Jesus is the mediator between God and men. It does not say that Jesus is one third of God and that part of God mediates between men and the other two above. Jesus also tells us that his Father sent him.
John 12:49
49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
Jesus says that he has not spoken of himself. (See also Joh 17:3) If he were part of a trinity he would have said that he was speaking about himself. When God gave him the commandment as to what to say and speak, God wasn't talking to himself he was talking to his son. God
never said he had a split personality! Jesus also states that God is greater than him. (Joh 14:28)
Matthew 20:23
23 And he said unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is
prepared of my Father.
Jesus explains that those which will sit with him in heaven are prepared by his Father. He doesn't say prepared by me or prepared by the Holy Spirit. He doesn't say that the individuals that will sit with him, will be decided by the church as some of the modern day
congregations have done. These individuals will also be known as his saints.
- I Cor 6:2 - speaks of saints judging the world.
- I The 4:1 - speaks of the return of Jesus Christ and his saints.
- Jud 1:4 - speaks of the Lord returning with 10,000 of his saints.
God has control over the decision of who is to become a saint, not a trinity meaning God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Just looking at these few scriptures about Jesus, you can see that Jesus is subject to God just as we are. Not even Satan can do anything without God's
permission! (Job 1:6)
Psalms 51:11
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.
In this psalm David is requesting that God not take His (God's), Holy Spirit away from him. Does this mean that God is going around possessing people? That is not something that fits the image of God, so what did he mean by this statement? Did he mean that he would drop dead
without it?
John 20:22
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
In the Old Testament everyone speaks of the Holy Spirit but in the New Testament that same Spirit is called the Holy Ghost. In this chapter of John, Jesus died and was resurrected, then he went to the disciples to prove that God's word is true. Jesus showed them his hands and
his side, said a few more words, then breathed on them. Before Jesus breathed on them they were very much alive just as David was when he wrote Psalm fifty-one. So, what did they receive when Jesus breathed on them? The day of Pentecost can give us a clue!
Acts 2:2 - 4
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Verse two explains that there was a sound from heaven and it filled the house meaning everyone could hear it. Verse three goes on to say there appeared cloven tongues that sat upon each of them. Now we already know that God is not a tongue. When the tongues sat on them the
people didn't get burned, so what does this cloven tongue symbolize? The word cloven represents a split like the phrase "cloven hoof". (Deu 14:7) Fire is symbolic of consumption just like a fire consumes a house if you allow it to burn. This alone tells you that it is
not God that they heard or Jesus, so what is it that has consumed them?
Verse four states that they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues. Since God is not a tongue then this Holy Ghost which the people received must be something else, just as the Spirit that the disciples received when Jesus breathed on them. Peter
explains that this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel about the last days.
Acts 2:17 - 18
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Jesus also explains what the Holy Ghost is in the book of Acts chapter one.
Acts 1:8
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost
part of the earth.
I emphasized the word power in this verse. Why? Because when you receive the Holy Ghost you receive the power to be able to do certain things that you were unable to do without it. In Acts chapter two the people received the capability to speak in more than one language, that
is where the symbol of the cloven tongue came from. When Jesus received the Holy Ghost, he then had other powers. The same thing happened to the disciples of Jesus Christ.
So where does the idea of God being a trinity come from? There isn't a scripture in the Bible that says God is the Father, God is the Son, and God is the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit). The confusion may come from a scripture in the book of First John and other scriptures that
call the Spirit "he", or from the scripture in the book of John contained in the first verse.
I John 5:7
7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Now before I explain this scripture or the one in the book of John, there is an understanding that is required about the Holy Ghost. There are different powers that can be received from the Holy Ghost. In the first book of Corinthians chapter twelve the gifts of the spirit are
explained. There are diversities of gifts but one Spirit. There is the gift that gives you words of wisdom, the gift that gives you words of knowledge, the gift of faith, the gift of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues
(different languages), and interpretation of tongues (translating the languages). (I Cor 12:8 - 10) Jesus also had a gift from God that none of the others had. The gift to create or change matter. With God's gift Jesus helped create everything. This is discussed in the conclusion.
While here on earth Jesus changed water into wine. (Joh 2:7 - 10, 4:46)
In the book of Numbers chapter eleven Moses spoke to God about the burden of all the Israelites being upon him (Moses). God told him to bring seventy men of the elders of Israel to the tabernacle. God told Moses that he would take of the spirit which is upon Moses and put it
upon them so they can bear the burden of the people with him (Moses), then they (the elders), prophesied and did not cease. (Num 11:17, 25) If the Holy Spirit were part of a trinity, why would God divide "himself", that was upon Moses among the Israelites? Why would God
call himself "it"?
Why would the Spirit itself bear witness with our spirit? (Rom 8:16) Why would he make intercession according to God's will? (Rom 8:27) The pronoun "he", has caused confusion about the Holy Spirit and caused it to become
part of a trinity. Wisdom is called "she", in the book of Proverbs but is not considered part of the trinity. (Pro 1:20, 8:1, 9:1) In some languages such as French, objects are specified with a masculine or feminine pronoun. Man is constantly using pronouns when
describing an object such as cars and boats.
The scripture in First John refers to three that bear record in heaven. It doesn't specify what type of record. What has God been concerned with from the time that He created man? He has been concerned with man following his commandments. (Ecc 12:13 - 14)
In the book of Deuteronomy God speaks to the Israelites of the record of blessings and curses.
Deuteronomy 30:19
19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
Job speaks of his witness in heaven and his record.
Job 16:19
19 Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.
Paul speaks of God being his record. The way it is phrased Paul means God being the recorder of how he feels.
Philippians 1:8
8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
Paul also speaks of calling God for a record about his soul.
II Corinthians 1:23
23 Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
John says the record is that God hath given to us eternal life.
I John 5:11
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
If God is keeping a record of blessings and curses, the Word which is Jesus Christ (Rev 19:13 - 16), obviously is doing the same thing. So how does the Holy Ghost fit into the record that God and Jesus are bearing? If God is recording his blessings and curses of those
that do and don't believe in him and his promises, like the promise that he made to Satan (Gen 3:15), then the record would show who has received them, should receive them, or will receive them. If Jesus is doing the same thing than what is the Holy Ghost? It is a record
of those that were given a gift or some gifts for believing in God and his promises. All of the recordings will agree, meaning the record will be of one accord. Nothing is given without God's approval, therefore would not be recorded unless God says so! There is only one
subject in this scripture, the record. Others have come up with two subjects, the record and God being three people in one.
Now to explain the verse from the book of John.
John 1:1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Since you now understand that there are no other gods and that Jehovah is the one true God, what was John telling us in the above verse? Jesus was called the Word before he came here as King of Kings. Some of the scriptures in the Old Testament don't emphasis that 'THE WORD'
came down from God meaning Jesus was the one delivering a message from Jehovah.
Rev 19:13 - 16
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called the Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
The last portion of John1:1, 'and the Word was God', may be another reason why the trinity is taught. In the New World Translation of the Holy Sciptures, WatchTower Bible & Tract Society of New York, Inc., Appendix 6A, the Greek phrase used was kai
theos en ho logos which means 'and the Word was a god (godlike; divine)'. As we already know, Jesus set the example of how we should carry ourselves each and everyday of our life since we were created in the image of God. God was pleased with the life that Jesus lived
during his short time here on earth because he always had a divine character about him.
There are two other scriptures that are of importance to the subject of the trinity. They also state that God is the only God and that Jesus received his power from God to do certain things.
Isaiah 45:18
18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.
Ephesians 3:9
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
God created everything in heaven including Jesus Christ, then He engineered the creation of everything on earth. After God engineered everything Jesus and God performed the labor of creating it.
God didn't engineer his plans and create the earth in vain. Earth is a place that He created to be inhabited and He created these things by Jesus Christ. Adam was placed in the garden to inhabit it and take care of it and have dominion over all the earth. (Gen 1:26,
2:15)
Conclusion:
Since God says not to have any other gods before him, make any graven images, and He is a jealous God in the first two commandments (Exo 20:3 - 5), why are individuals upsetting God by teaching what is false? God has emphasized throughout the Bible that there is only one God.
All the other gods have been created in the mind of man. We don't have the capability of creating anything from nothing. Man is now trying to create God's creatures from nothing but can't. They have to use what has already been created to recreate. The scriptures say there is
nothing new under the sun. (Ecc 1:9) Until God decides there should be something new, we have to use what is available to us.
God has always been the Master Planner! I'm sure Jesus realized how great his Father was when he was there by his side helping create everything. (Pro 8:22 - 31, Joh 5:20) When God gave him the powers to do everything he was able to do, and was told to do certain things here
on earth, he was intelligent enough to know that if he didn't follow his Father's plan, he may end up like Satan, kicked out of heaven. (Luk 10:18) In Satan's case you can't say, "Boys will be boys!"
By Adam and Eve eating the fruit in the garden, we have the capability to think, analyze, decipher, question, and be creative using either good or evil. If you read the Bible and it says that God is the only one, why draw the conclusion that there are three gods in heaven and
assume that God is telling us a lie? Isn't that considered thinking against God's words, meaning evil thoughts instead of good? Satan has done it again!
We have to fully understand what God wants and follow the commandments since we do have a brain that works better than a computer, or we may become a nonentity thanks to Satan, Adam, and Eve. Think about a lie for instance, Satan was the first one in the Bible to tell a lie.
He was kicked out of heaven and will be destroyed in the future! (Rev 20:10) Adam and Eve ate a piece of fruit from a tree which God told them not to eat. Because of what they did, woman have labor pains and men have to eat of the ground where there are now thorns and thistles.
Eventually Adam and Eve died, passing their curses down to us. (Gen 2:16 - 3:24) Cain was the first person to kill someone then lie about it. Look at what happened to him and his seed! The flood took care of them. (Gen 6:17)
The families of the sons of Noah built a tower to reach to the heavens. God didn't like that so He caused the people to speak in different tongues so they wouldn't be able to understand each other. (Gen 10:32 - 11:9) Some of the Israelites while wondering in the wilderness
complained about the manna that they had to eat. Since they didn't appreciate what God was doing for them, He gave them some quail to eat. For those that complained and lusted for meat, while it was still in their mouths a great plague came upon them and they died. (Num 11:1 -
33) Today most of those things that were done by the above mentioned individuals would be considered something small by most people, but God didn't think so! Notice I didn't say the trinity didn't think so. A little white lie or a big one is still a lie. A lie or a
complaint, no matter what color or size can go a long way.
There was a time in which God had thoughts of destroying man because of all the evil that had multiplied on the earth. (Gen 6:5 - 7) Aren't you thankful he didn't? If so, let God know. I'm sure He would love to hear from you!
