Chapter 1

"Brian, I'm gonna do it!" Nick exclaimed over the phone to his best friend Brian.

"Do what?" his friend asked.

"I'm gonna ask Melisa to marry me!" There was silence on the other line as Nick waited for a response from his friend. He began impatiently drumming his fingers on the coffee table. "Well? Aren't you gonna say anything?"

Brian sighed, "What do you want me to say?"

"Anything! I want to know your opinion on this! It's not like I ask the somone to marry me everday." Nick said. Brian could tell he was getting frustrated.

"Honestly Nick, I think it's too soon." Brian waited for Nick's tantrum. As a precaution he held the phone away from his ear, but surprisingly, the voice on the other end was calm.

"You mind elaborating on that Bri?"

"I'm gonna be frank with you here." Brian said.

"Alright, but can I still be Nick. I like my name!" Nick laughed. Truth was, this conversation was beginning to get very uncomfortable.

"Nick, I'm serious! I don't think you and Melisa are the same as you used to be. Sure, you still do love each other very much, but you don't have that glint in your eyes anymore. The glint that you used to have whenever you saw her. I know you've worked hard to get her back, but I don't think she's completely yours yet."

"What do you mean? You think she's cheating on me? With who? I'm gonna kill that bastard!"

"See what I mean. You're jumping to conclusions. You and Melisa don't have that same trust in each other that you used to and whether you want to admit it or not, that flame is gone Nick!"

"NO!" Nick shouted, but calmed down a bit. "No! It's not gone. It's just gonna take some time. I think marriage is the perfect solution!"

"Nick, you cannot use marriage as a solution. It's something you have to be sure of!"

"I am sure of it! I know that I love her and she loves me. In time, we will gain our trust back in each other! Till then, marriage is the perfect binding force."

"Nick! I'm just stating what I think! You do what you want, but promise me that you will think this through. Promise me!"

Nick sighed. "I promise." He heard a click on the other line implying that Brian had hung up. Just as Nick hung up the phone, the doorbell rang.

Nick opened the door to be faced with a beautiful woman with brown hair that had strikes of bloned and deep light brown eyes with little spekes of gold. For a second his breath caught in his throat. Then he remembered where he was. "Um who are you?"

The girl seem to be taken aback. "You...you don't remember me?"

Nick shook his head."I would remember a beautiful face like yours but please refresh my memory!"

"Um...well my name is Paradise Mitchel and um..."Paradise forgot where she was for second as she gazed into his blue eyes. That didn't last for long as she remembered what she came here to do. She slipped her attitude back on, knowing she'd have to be tough for this. "Mr. Carter, I believe we have something very important to discuss." Paradise said in a bolder voice as she pushed Nick aside and walked into his house.

"Um...sure. What do we have to talk about?" Nick asked taken by surprise of her quick change in character. He followed her into the living room and asked her to sit down. "So what do we have to talk about?"

"Marriage." she stated as if it were nothing.

"Marriage?" he squeaked. "Did Brian send you?"

Confusion etched on Paradise's face. "Who's Brian?"

"Never mind. Tell me what can I do for you." Nick said.

"Marry me."
