Lourdes couldn't stand it another minute, she decided to call him, although she knew that he never left work before five in the afternoon, she had to try to convince him to come a little earlier, after all it was their two year anniversary of being together. Abel already had spoken to his partner, who was also his best friend, to tell him that he was leaving work two hours earlier, he had so many things to do, but he didn't care, he had made up his mind, and as soon as the clock strike three, he would go out and get her the perfect ring. The telephone rang and he picked it up hoping it was the woman he loved and not another one of the boring calls he usually recieved of someone asking about the computer software the company where he was the vicepresident sold. "Baby what's up" Lourdes said in the other end of the phone "hey sweetie" Abel answered while the biggest smile drew in his face, and then he said "Everything's fine, except that I'm in a little bit of a hurry with all this work". Lourdes was a little dissapointed after hearing his answer and said "ohhh, that means you can't come earlier". Although he was going to leave work early, Abel decided to lie, he wanted to have time to buy her the ring and surprise her "baby, I just told you I have so much work, I think I'm gonna have to work untill really late". "That's so unfair, I got off from work so early, and you have to stay till late, please baby don't do this to me" she said trying to convince him, and while he was looking out the window he told her "i'll try, but I'm not promising anything". "Ok baby, I love you" Lourdes said a little more satisfied after hearing his answer. "I love you too, see you later" Abel said hanging up the phone.
It was already three in the afternoon, and Abel started to clean his desk to go, he was puting some documents in his briefcase and at that moment his partner knocked on his door and said "may I come in?" Abel looked at him and as a joke said "of course, as long as I don't have to stay more time". Didier sat on a chair in front of Abel's desk and said "You're my best friend, but friendship and work are two separarte things, and as much as I hate doing this... Abel I need you this Monday in Arizona to sign a contract". Abel got mad because his friend knew that those days he would be having his vacations "why can't you go, you know I'm taking two weeks off"". "I know, but it's an emergency, that contract has to be sign this Monday and I can't go because you know, this Monday I have to sign another contract" Didier answered a little bit sadden by the fact that he was messing up his best friend's time off. Irritated and looking for an excuse not to go, Abel said "send someone else, you know I promised Lourdes that I would go with her to visit her parents". "I know... but you're the vicepresident of this company, you know I wouldn't ask you to go if it wasn't an emergency" Didier told him to convince him that he would have to go and then he added "look, just do this, then take more time for vacations". Abel took his things and before leaving the office he said "I'm taking more time after I do that, we'll talk later". He went to a jewlery where he had seen a ring he was sure Lourdes would love, the stone had the shape of a heart, surrounded by small and beautifull diamonds. As soon as he walked in he asked the jewler for it and to carve in it's inside "I love you". After a while the ring was ready and with a big smile he went off to buy her a dozen of white roses, his girlfriend's favorite flower.
Lourdes was so excited, she was already dressed up for when Abel arrived, although she knew that he would probably come late because he had told her he had a lot of work to do. She was thinking what to make for dinner, but then she thought that he would probably take her out to some fancy and romantic restaurant to celebrate their anniversary, she decided to call him again to hurry him up, and at the same time she picked up the phone to dial, he walked in through the door. As soon as she saw him, she hung up the phone and ran to him to recieve him, she practically jumped on him to kiss and hug him. "Baby" she said at the same time she was kissing him, Abel just laughed at the way she was greeting him and carried her in his arms to the sofa where he kissed her softly and said "I love you. Baby I'm gonna take a bath" he said standing up and walkin to the bedroom, where he hid the little box with the ring, then he went into the shower and took a bath. He finished, got dressed and went to the living room where his girlfriend was putting the roses in water, he grabbed her by the waist, kissed her neck and said "let's stay here baby, ok?" "no prob, tonight will be unforgatable" Lourdes said with a smile on her face. Abel smiled at her, caressed her face and said "mmm... baby, I'll make you dinner tonight ok". Lourdes rolled her tongue in her lips and said "mmmm... thank you baby, then I'll make this look romantic". While Abel was cooking his speciality, lasagna, Lourdes set the mood in the dining room with white and red candles, she put a red table cloth over the table to symbolize the pasion and then she put the white rose petals in top of the table colth. Everything was ready and served in the table, Abel opened a bottle of wine and served a little bit in two cups. They sat really close to each other and ate while looking into each others eyes with tenderness, they gave each other passionate kisses and caresses. After eating Lourdes went to get the gift she had for Abel, while he went and get the ring, he put it in his pocket and when he went to the living room he took one of the roses in his hand. Lourdes kissed him passionately, she gave him a box and said "I hope you like it". Abel opened it and it was a beautiful watch "I love it, sweetie, thank you so much!" he said with a big smile on his face and then he kissed her forehead. "But that's not all, look what it says here". She showed him what she was talking about, in the inside of the watch were carved the words "Abel I love you, Lourdes". "Thanks, angel, I love it, but now it's time for my gift" Abel said slipping his hand in his pocket to take out the little box, and kneeling on the floor. Lourdes already knew what Abel was about to do, and with red eyes and the biggest smile she caressed his face and kissed him. "For all the kisses you give me, I know how much you love me, and for all those kisses, and for making me happy is that I love you so much, please accept me as your husband and marry me" Abel said with a smile that iluminated his face. She hold him as tight as she could and after kissing him she said "of course baby, there's nothing in this world I would love more than to be your wife, I love you".
That Saturday they took a flight to visit Lourdes' parents. They had a nice and beautifull evening, Lourdes told her parents the news that they were getting married, and they were really happy for her, because they knew Abel was a good and responsible man, that would make her happy. The next day Abel had to leave to Arizona, because he had decided to go in a car rather than flying because he had never liked taking airplanes. "Well baby, I have to go now, I'll call you as soon as I get to the hotel" Abel said after kissing her and taking his bag. "Please, baby, don't go, I have a bad feeling" Lourdes said grabbing his hand, he caressed her face with tenderness, gave her a smile and said "Lourdes, you always have a bad feeling everytime I have to go, come on, you know this is my job, I'll be back in two days, besides I'll call you tonight as soon a I get there, it'll be allright". She put both hands over Abel's shoulders and looking into his eyes, she said "I know, I know, just promise me you wont forget to call me" he kissed her nose and said "baby, I promise, I love you, I'll see you Tuesday". They kissed and he got into the rented car, saying good bye with his hand while he drove away. He had been driving for a few hours and felt exhausted and hungry, so he stopped at a convenience store in the middle of the road. After filling the tank, he went into the store and ordered a big sandwish, and another one just in case he got hungry in the middle of nowhere, he went to the bathroom, and when he came out he took his wallet out of his pocket and paid the bill, as soon as he got into the car he threw his wallet in his bag. He was ready to get back on the road, and just when he was about to drive away, at the other side of the road he saw a young man with a sign that said Arizona. Since Abel was on his way there, and the trip was boring, he offered a ride. He stopped the car in front of the other guy and before he got in, Abel threw his bag in the back seat. "Thanks, nice to meet you, Albert" the guy said extending his hand "nice to meet you too, I'm Abel" he said shaking Albert's hand. Albert looked a lot like Abel, they were the same height, same age, same eyes, and they had a lot of things in common, which made Abel's trip a lot more amusing. The only thing they didn't share in common was that Albert didn't have anyone; his father, the only one he had left had died a few months before. It was already one in the morning, Albert was asleep, and Abel was trying not to fall asleep, the road was lonely and pretty dark, so he turned the radio on to stay awake and kept driving. An hour later, Abel noticed that the wind was more violent so he closed all the windows and continued driving, outside the dust was moving because of the ferocious wind. Before he knew it, he was trapped in a dust storm and his visibility of the road minimized, he slowed down a little and instead of stopping the car, like he should've, he kept driving with dificultty and since it was so dark and he wasn't able to see clearly because of all the dust, he didn't realize he was driving in the wrong direction, and before he could do anything, the car went down a hill and it hit the ground, Albert died in the instant and Abel got badly injured and unconcious; a few minutes later the car exploted.
Lourdes couldn't stop crying, she was too nervous and worried, she wouldn't leave her seat beside the telephone while she bitten her nails; a habit she had since she was little and couldn't control every time she was in that state of mind. Her mother trying to comfort her, said "Lourdes clam down, why don't you try to rest, he'll be all-" "how the hell do you want me to calm down, I'm too worried right now to try and rest, he's not in the hotel and it's 5:30 in the morning already, he was suposed to be there two hours ago!!" she yelled with tears in her eyes. Her father came out of the kitchen with a herbal tee for her "sweetie don't cry, just drink this and relax a little bit". She reacted furios and frustrated saying "I don't want anything, can't you understand, I'm not gonna relax until he calls me!!!" Her parents left her alone, they knew that's what she wanted at that moment. She had already called everyone, trying to hear some news, but sadly, nobody knew anything and she was anxcious waiting for at least a call from a hospital or from a police station with news about him, and her biggest wish at that moment was that the news they gave her wasn't a bad one.
She had fallen asleep with the telephone on her lap and with red eyes, it was already 11:30 in the morning and she woke up to the sound of the phone ringing, and she answered it hoping it was him "Abel?!?!" The voice of a man answered her, it was Abel's dad with a node on his throat "no, no, Lourdes, this is Ray". She could tell he was crying, and with tears in her eyes she started bombarding him with hoping words "please tell me he's fine, tell me you just talked to him!!" Abel's dad was about to explain to her what had happened with tears running down his face, but Lourdes was so desperate after noticing that he was crying, that she wouldn't let him begin by screaming in the telephone "just tell me what is it, where is he? please tell me he's fine!" She had lost the strengh in her legs, and she was now kneeling on the floor screaming out of control, her father took the phone out of her hands to hear the horrible news, while her mother tried to comfort her.
After hearing the bad news, Mark, Lourdes' father, had to find a way to tell his daughter that Abel had an accident in the middle of the road and burned in the car. At first, Lourdes couldn't accept the fact that Abel was dead, but she had to, just like everyone else had. She knew she had to go on, even though it hurt like hell losing whom she thought was her eternal love. Didier had been Abel's best friend since they were kids; he wanted to remember all the happy moments they lived together to forget the pain and smile for a while. He knew Lourdes was as sad as he was and he really liked her as a friend so he walked up to her and asked her out for a drink. She accepted and after the funeral was over, they went to a cafe that was pretty close from where they were.
