Outside a beautiful Florida home over looking the beach Hazel and Devon sat with their feet dangling in the pool talking just as they always did on warm summer nights. "So Devon you happy that you're going to start recording like your father?" Hazel asked as she looked at her best friend. He was medium height, about 5'8" or 5'9" with strawberry blonde hair and crystal blue eyes that shone like diamonds against his slight tan.
"I guess, I am not to sure about it yet. But it should be ok. Since that is going to take up a lot of my summer what are you going to be doing?" he asked still smiling at his friend. She looked nothing like Devon, she had jet-black hair down to her shoulders, deep dark brown eyes, and she stood about 5'5", weighed about 105 lbs. and had tan, almost cooper colored skin.
"I don't know, I heard my mom talking and she said that we may be moving sometime soon."
"Where to?" Devon asked looking a little worried.
"California." She said sadly.
"What California??? That's so far from Florida though!!! Tell them they can't!!!" he said thinking he was going to lose his best friend. "We've practically grown up together!! They can't just say that suddenly you guys are moving!!" he said now angry with Hazel's parents. He knew it was because her mother's selfishness.
"I don't know what I can do to convince them not to." She said with tears in her eyes.
"Don't worry Haze!! We'll figure something out!!" he said wrapping his arms around her and pulling her closer to him. "If I could convince my mom and dad not to move back to Kentucky once and Georgia twice then convincing your parents shouldn't be too hard."
"Thank you so much Dev! You don't know how much it would mean to me to be able to stay here."
***Later***
"Dev, you better get going before you get in trouble from your mom and dad." Hazel said noticing it was already 2 AM.
"I promised you I'd stay with you until your parents came back home."
"Ok well just call them and tell them you are still here." She said handing him her cell phone.
"No that's ok, I've got mine right here." He said pulling his out of his pocket and dialed his dad's number. When he heard someone pick up he said "Hey dad this is Dev."
"Hey where are you?" he asked figuring Devon was probably still at Hazel's. Suddenly they heard another phone being picked up.
"Bri who is it?"
"It's me, mom." Devon said knowing his mother's voice.
"Devon Thomas Littrell where on earth are you at 2 in the morning?"
"I'm at Hazel's. Her parents aren't at home and there isn't anyone here to keep her company. She doesn't like being alone so we have been watching movies."
"That's fine son. When you come in make sure you reset the alarm ok?" Brian said calmly.
"Ok I will dad, Good night mom, Good night dad."
"Good night Son." Brian said hanging up.
"Dev, remember you have to come to Brad's party…k?" she reminded him.
"I'll be there don't worry!!! I won't forget my own brother's birthday!"
"Ok just reminding you sweetie. Good night."
"Night mom." He said as he hung up the phone
"Ah how cute!" Hazel cooed pinching Devon's cheek.
"Hey! Stop!" he said pushing her hand away. "I was going to ask if you might want to come to some parties with me. What do ya say?"
"What parties and who will be there?" she inquired wondering why he wasn't taking a girl he dated.
"Brad's birthday party tomorrow then the next night is a surprise party for Shawn's girlfriend."
"Um…why aren't you bringing one of your many girlfriends Dev?"
"Because I want you to come…then I can dance with whoever and nobody will get mad at me."
"Ah, sure I'll go." She said giving in. "But that means I have to go buy a new outfit, so that means I need some sleep. You want to going shopping tomorrow or should I invite a female friend instead?"
"Female friend definitely!!" he said quickly.
"Wimp!!" she said laughing at him. "Well Dev you want to stay the night, looks like my parents aren't coming home tonight, and I really hate staying in this house alone."
"Sure as long I get my room." He said referring to the room next to Hazel's, which he had kind of claimed. It was a guest room but whenever he stayed at the house he had to sleep in that room.
"Of course you get your room!! There is nobody else here to take it dork!!" she said and playfully slapped the back of his head.
"Well now I have to call my parents back and let them know I'm not coming home tonight." He said as he picked up his phone and pushed redial.
"Hello?"
"Hey dad, it's me again. I am staying at Hazel's for the night. And I was wondering if it's ok if I bring her as my guest to Brad's birthday?"
"Yeah, Brad will love that, he has a huge crush on Hazel. And ok I'll see you tomorrow"
"Ok, good night dad." He said as he hung up.
***The Next Day***
"Hazel? You ready to go?" Devon asked knocking on her bedroom door. He had gone home that morning while Hazel was shopping. Now he was coming to pick her up for his little brother's birthday party.
"Yeah come on in Dev." She said as she tied her white tennis shoes.
"Hey you ready?" he asked impatiently.
"Yeah! Let's go!" she said standing up. Just as she did Devon looked up and saw her in her Red, white, and blue American flag design tank top with spaghetti straps and blue daisy dukes. Her hair held back in a red 'do rag.
"Ok let's get going Haze."
***Later***
"Hazel is here!!!" Brad yelled as he ran over to her.
"Hey Brad! Happy 13th birthday!!!"
"Dev you win for best present so far and I doubt anything can top this!!" he said grinning as he wrapped his arms around Hazel.
"Sorry buddy but she isn't a present, just a friend."
"Ok, can you stay here?"
"When?" she said thinking maybe he was asking if she could stay the night.
"Forever?" he said sweetly.
"Um I don't know…how about just tonight if your parents let me?"
"Ok I guess that will have to do!" he said as he kissed her cheek. And walked away.
"Aww Dev Brad is so cute!! I remember when he was a little kid!! He was so adorable!!" Hazel said reminiscing about the past.
"He was never adorable and he still is a little kid."
"You are just jealous because your little brother is so much cuter then you." She teased.
"Yeah sure right!!!" he said laughing.
***The Next Day***
"Hazel come on!! We're going to be late for Shawn's Party!" Devon Whined. His dad had agreed to allow the party to be held at his house but he was at Hazel's at the moment waiting for her to finish getting ready.
"Ok! I am ready!" she said as she stepped out wearing a baby blue spaghetti strap dress that was down to about mid-thigh.
"Hey you look great! Now let's go!" he said smiling.
"Ok, ok! Chill out Dev!!" she said as she followed him to his car. In a few minutes they were at Devon's. Slowly she got out of the car and followed Devon to the door. When they got in a bunch of their friends greeted them at the door. Just as everyone got settled they heard another car pull into the driveway and quickly turned out all of the lights. When the door opened everyone shouted "Surprise! Happy 18th Birthday!!"
"Oh my gosh!! Thank you all so, so much!!" Marie exclaimed thrilled to see how many people remembered her birthday.
***Later***
The party was just ending. The only people still there were Shawn, Devon, Hazel, and Marie. "Hey Dev, I was just coming to tell you any of your friends can bunk here for the night if they'd like. If fact Shawn, your father insisted that you stay."
"Ok thanks dad. Oh and by the way, I'd like you to met Shawn's girlfriend Marie." He said moving aside to reveal a beautiful young girl.
"Oh my god." Brian gasped when he saw the girl. "Nina…this…oh my god."
"Um ok, Nice to meet you too Mr. Littrell. My name is Marie." She said looking confused.
"Oh I am so sorry, it's just you remind me of someone I used to know. It was very nice meeting you Marie. Hazel, Shawn and Marie may all stay the night since Shawn drove Marie here and Shawn's father does not want him to be driving at this hour and Hazel, just because we love you too much to let you leave!" he said smiling. He had known Hazel since Devon was born.
"Good Night Dad." Devon said trying to hint for his father to leave.
"Good Night son." He said as he turned and walked up the stairs to his room. His wife, Leighanne had just left to work on location for her new movie so he was there alone with their three children. Slowly he made his way over to his small bookcase and pulled it away from the wall revealing a door that looked like an ordinary closet, but inside was a small nursery that had rainbows painted on the walls and a baby crib in the center of the room. The dresser was white with rainbows as the drawer pulls and the changing table was also white with a rainbow print curtain covering the selves. The shades were drawn and the lacey curtain hung down over them. Brian looked around the room and spotted the box full of pictures and other memories he had stashed in the room. He couldn't believe it had been over 15 years since he had last been in this room. Slowly he walked over to the dresser and opened the top drawer, still filled with little girl baby clothes. But on top of it all was an unopened envelope. He picked it up and read the front "Child Protective Services". Carefully he opened the flap.
