Chapter 13

"What the hell?" She seemed to ask herself as she stared at Mark sitting in the corner. Nick was looking at him also and wondered what she ever saw in him. Wait I remember, he wasn't me. He scolded himself. That thought brought him back to reality. Jess was looking at Nick now, he knew that look all too well. She wanted to get up and punch him in the face.

"Jess, you know you can't do that. We're in a public place, do you remember what happened last time?" He warned her.

Flashback

"Hey baby. Why don't you come over here and sit on my lap?" Some obnoxious jock shouted from the table across from them. Jess was sitting on Nick's lap telling him a story when he interupted her. She looked at him then looked back at Nick. "What's the matter baby? Am I too much man for you?" His jock friends laughed at his comment, thinking they were all that and a bag of chips.

"Jess, don't." Brian said when he saw the look on her face. Brian knew the look. He had seen it many times right before she would get into a fight with him or Baker. He's gotten a couple black eyes after he had just played a mean prank on his little sister. But the look didn't disappear; she just got up and walked over to them.

"I knew you wanted me. Everyone does." The Brad Pitt wannabe stated, as if it was a known fact all around the world that he was the catch of the century. Jess just smiled as he rose to his feet and stood a good foot over her. She looked up at him and simply said,

"You know, I've wanted to do this since I got here and saw your pretty little face." The guy smiled and looked at his friends as if he needed their approval. When he turned back to look at Jess he was introduced to her fist. He doubled over and cupped his nose.

"You bitch." He screamed in pain. "You broke my nose." Jess looked at him innocently.

"Who? Little ole me?" she said in her Tennessee accent. With that she walked back to her table when the manager showed up. He ended up banning them from the popular burger joint.

End Flashback

Jess said nothing as to whether or not she remembered even though she did. All she did was get up and head over to Mark's table. "Jess." Nick called following her. He stepped in front of her in an attempt to reason with her. "Look, I realize that he hurt you and I know that this is a total shock to you but do you think that using his face as a punching bag is the best way to go about it?" She stopped and looked up at him.

"Nick, I know you think you know how I'm feeling now but you don't. This is not what I went through with you. I l…I loved you so much and you weren't with someone the whole time you were with me. He was and he's going to hear about it." He knew he couldn't stop her once she put her mind to it so he just stepped out of the way and followed her over to the table.

"Hello Mark." She said. Mark looked up at her startled. He didn't expect to see her here. He looked over at Nick who was standing closely behind her with his hands on her shoulders.

"Well, well. It didn't take you long to find someone new did it?" He remarked.

"Shut-up." She said. "You know, when Nick cheated on me, I thought that was bad, but what you did, that was so much worse."

"I don't know what you are talking about Jessie."

"It's Jessica to you dumbass. I just talked to your girlfriend and I wanted to wish you a happy two-year anniversary. I probably won't be seeing you in two weeks so I thought I'd congratulate you now." His eyes widened. "What? Didn't you think I'd find out? Did you think I wouldn't ever hear about your sick, twisted, little game? How disturbed are you? Did she know all along? I don't think I want to know. I can't believe I trusted you." She was nearly in tears by now. She stopped to take a few breaths to calm herself. She didn't say anything more. She just walked toward the exit and waited for Nick who was still standing by Mark.

"Man, I can't believe I screwed up with her. She was a nice lay." Nick's anger had risen to a point where he couldn't hold it anymore. He had listened to Jess cry over him, he had listened to her get angry with him, and now he was listening to this jerk call her down like that. He couldn't just leave and let him think that he had gotten away with the perfect tryst. Mark was laughing at his joke and didn't even notice Nick's fist flying for his face. After he punched him he grabbed his face and brought it close to his.

"Don't you ever talk about her like that again, understand? And stay away from her, if I ever hear about you trying to get near her I won't be you're only problem." He walked toward a stunned Jess and grabbed her hand, "You deserve so much better than that ass." He said as they walked out the door.

"You realize they will probably never let us in that restaurant again."

"Eh, you gotta do what you gotta do." He stated simply. Jess smiled up at him and stood on her tip toes and kissed him on the cheek.

"Thank you for that." He said nothing as they got in the car and drove away.
