Chapter 2

"It's ten-thirty. Shouldn't Nick be back with Lucy by now?" Howie asked walking into the living room where everyone was gathered catching up. Just then they heard the door open and the familiar sound of Nick and Lucy's bickering.

"I told you, you gave me the wrong gate number." Nick said.

"Nick, I was the one on the plane, why would I give you the wrong gate number?"

"How am I supposed to know. I don't know what goes on in that twisted head of yours." Nick countered.

"Nickolas Carter. How could you say that?"

"Lucy, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I just don't want to argue anymore." Nick entered the living room first rolling his eyes. Then Lucy followed, with a big smile on her face ready to greet everybody. Everyone turned and looked at them.

"Hi. I'm Lucy. You must be Brian's family. It is great to meet you." Mr. and

Mrs. Littrell smiled at her and welcomed her into their home. Everyone got comfortable and settled in to watch some home movies of Brian. Of course Brian objected profusely but got ignored because he knew everyone wanted to finish watching what Jessica had started showing them on the bus a little over a year ago. The thought of Jessica and what it was like before everything went wacko brought a smile to Brian's face. He started to remember all the fun times they shared before she made Earl drop her off in the middle of Lexington. All the laughs and smiles, and pranks she pulled on all of them. The time she put toothpaste in Howie's ears while he was sleeping. Brian let out a little chuckle then started to get tears in his eyes. I can't believe we all went along with Nick. How could we do that to Jess? How could we let Nick do that to her? Brian stood up and told everyone he was going to take Kaos, Jess' German Shepherd that Nick bought her for her graduation, for a walk. No one noticed, too busy laughing at Brian's hair cut form his fifth grade pageant.

It's such a beautiful day. Perfect for April. Jess thought as she pulled into her mother's house and shut the truck off. She grabbed the keys from the ignition and walked up the steps to the front door of the colonial house she spent her 19 years in. She opened the door, stepped in and almost tripped over all the shoes crowded in the front of the door. "What the?" She whispered as she walked to the living room. "Mom, don't you think eleven o'clock is a little early to be having a party, even for you?" she joked as she walked into the living room sideways staring at all the shoes and smiling. When she looked up her mouth practically dropped to the floor.
