Chapter 8

************************************** Nick and Jessica stood in the driveway hugging for ten minutes. She didn't want to cry, not in front of Nick. That 's the last thing she needed, for him to see her cry. Suddenly she felt very foolish, she let go of Nick and stepped back. Nick looked at her with worry in his eyes, she knew she should say something.

"Nick, thank you. You know, for, well, you know." She said looking at the ground. Nick smiled and told her it was no problem.

"Jess, if you need to talk, or not talk, I'm here. I'll be the friend you need me to be." He tried to see her expression but she was too short for that, Damn, sometimes I wish you weren't 5'6'', he thought. She looked up at him, almost taking him by surprise.

"Thank you. I mean it. I might just take you up on that offer." She turned to get into her truck but then she remembered about what she said at the radio station, she swung back around,

"Nick," he had started to walk away and had to turn around also. "About what I said at the radio station, I'm….."

Nick cut her off. "You don't need to apologize. I guess I shouldn't have said what I said. It's just weird, you know. I mean, you were right there and I knew you expected me to just dismiss the question but Lucy was right there too. If I didn't say what I did she would have chewed me out about it, saying how she wouldn't be able to trust me. Sound stupid I know but, you don't Lucy, she can be a real bitch when she wants to be." He smiled trying to lighten things up, he was relieved when he saw her smile back.

"I can be a real bitch when I want to be too. Mark learned that the hard way. I hope his 'friend' has extra room in her house for him." Nick looked at her confused, she smiled, reassuring him.

"I kicked him out, told him to be out before I got home or else Bri, Baker and Kev would be really angry. If ya know what I mean?" Nick smiled, chuckled almost and turned to walk back to the pool. He was stopped when Jess called out to him.

"yeah, what is it?" he asked.

"Can you not tell the others. I'm going to wait until you guys leave, I don't want them feeling sorry for me."

"No problem, our little secret." He winked and walked away. Jess smiled to herself. Our little secret, if I didn't know any better I'd say he was flirting with me. She shook the thought out of her mind and drove away. Nick entered the pool area of the backyard with a smile on his face. Did I just flirt with her? Our little secret, what the hell, I was. He smiled to himself at the thought but then frowned, knowing he shouldn't be thinking of her like that, he was her friend, that was it. "Hey, Frack!" Brian called out from the pool.

" You gonna jump in or are we going to have to pull you in?" He joked. Nick looked at him with a blank expression on his face. Brian splashed him but his expression didn't change. *****************************

Jess was in her truck thinking about her encounter with Nick. He seemed so nice and genuinely concerned about her. She didn't want to believe that maybe she was wrong about not talking to him for so long but she knew she probably was. Now it didn't hurt as bad as it did this morning, she was surprised how feelings like that disappeared so quickly.

"Maybe this is a new beginning." She thought out loud. " Maybe he really meant what he said about respect earlier. Maybe we can be the friends we used to be, at the beginning of the Backstreet Boys." Satisfied with everything that just went down with Nick and her feelings for him, she pulled into the parking garage. I hope Mark is gone. He really doesn't want to see me now. She thought stepping off the elevator, making her way to her door. She took a deep breath before going into her apartment. She couldn't believe what she saw.

"What the hell is this? What did he do?" She said astonished at what she saw in her home. She walked around looking at everything.
