HOW have you guys managed to raise such well-rounded, polite kids?
Karen: We wanted our children to grow up respecting other people,
finding joy in work, and having broad enough experiences to appreciate the
diversity in our world--people, places, nature. Respect, something you teach by
actions as well as words, is evident when people are polite. As for the work
thing, here's an example. When Josh had finished MMC and was working on his
music demos and considering beginning college, we encouraged him to wait tables
at a local restaurant chain. (He did it until 'N Sync came together.) We wanted
him to always have the ability to earn money quickly wherever he was if he was
doing his music and didn't have revenue from that. And we wanted him to
understand the effort most people have to put out to pay bills (he had, after
all, earned much more than the average teenager because he had worked as a TV
performer from the time he was 14-18.) We have tried to pass on our work ethic
to Tyler and Heather as well, and we as parents are particularly proud that each
of them is a highly valued contributor where they work and they find joy in
their work. Travel has been one of the keys to passing on appreciation of the
people, places and things in God's creation.
Roy: We tried to show them how to treat people respectfully. We enjoy many
different cultures and we have all encouraged them to recognize and value
differences.
