The Essence of "G"

Where I was raised - Ste Rose, laval

The parish of Sainte-Rose was founded on March 16, 1740 by the order of the Intendant, Gilles Hocquart. At the time, the settlers thought the church in the parish of Saint Francois de Sales was too far and started construction of a large stone presbytery the following year.

In 1746, the first wooden church was completed. It was located 8 km. east of the present village. Given the development of the parish, the Bishop of Quebec wanted the church relocated. A fierce argument broke out ending with Monseigneur Briand barring the parishioners from 1768 until 1780.

A second church finally rose a few yards from today's Sainte Rose de Lima Church. The second church was followed 24 years later by a third. Today, the church is offically recognized by the Quebec Department of Cultural Affairs for its historical value.
