FEBRUARY
There was a time when the month of February was the sunniest and nicest month of the year.
And this happened until one day when the Winter discovered the reason, by finding out that
her youngest daughter, the princess February with silver hair, had fallen in love with the
Sun. And when she was over the earth, the Sun was coming close to be by her side,
therefore the month of February was the mildest and full of light month of the year.
When the King Year found out, he got extremely
angry and punished the princess by cursing her to be the ugliest, coldest and saddest
month of all. And to make sure that she will not meet her beloved again, he has emprisoned
her forever in a tower which she would never come out from. Thus, since the princess could
not come anymore to give life to the earth, the month with her name became the saddest and
lifeless month of the year.
Locked up in her prison, the princess was
soothing her heart thinking that she would see, at least from far, the earth enlightened
by the Sun during the other seasons and thus she will always feel close to her beloved. But the seasons passing
by one after the other were always gray and
sad, for the Sun was not showing up anymore.
Then she understood that he could not find the
way to the earth anymore, without the silver light of her wonderful hair, that used to
show him the path. Therefore, she cut it knitting a thick silver rope that she hung at the tower window so that the Sun
could see it. And that very moment, the sun beams flooded the entire earth again, making
the flowers bloom and the birds sing.
Since then, the coldest, saddest and most lifeless month of the year is the
shortest one as well. Because every winter the princess February, driven away from love,
cuts her silver hair throwing it on the way of the Sun, thus giving a part of her life for
the whole earth to enjoy the warmth and light she will never feel again.
