En 1909, le gouverneur-général du Canada, Earl Grey, a fait don d'un trophée pour le Championnat de Rugby Football du Canada.
Le trophée, connu éventuellement sous le nom de la Coupe Grey, était disputé entre les équipes inscrites dans l'Union de Rugby du Canada.
Depuis 1954, seulement les équipes de la Ligue Canadienne de Football ont le droit de compétitionner pour la Coupe Grey.
