Honey Owen

I might as well respond to the first question I always get about Honey: “Is it a cat and does it act like a cat?” And the answer is a resounding “Yes, the sphynx is definitely a cat in every sense of the word!” Poor Honey has had to withstand all sorts of comments in the first 2 years of her life. Many people will ask if she is a Chihuahua dog. Well, both Honey and I are certainly insulted by that one – I mean can you imagine being a cat that is mistaken for a dog? Honey handles it well, and will usually show off to the offending person making sure she purrs and puts on a show for them. I have to say the worst comment made to her was when the repairman asked, and I quote “What the hell is wrong with that cat. That cat got mange?” Then when I explained to him that Honey was a hairless cat, he commented “Why the hell would someone want a cat with no hair?” He had to come back another time, and while on the phone, he said to me “I remember you, you’re the one with the skinless cat.” Oh Brother!!! If you’ve read Hope’s (Honey’s sister) bio, then you know my initial search for Honey began because Hope needed an energetic friend to play with. I’ve always had an interest in exotic cats, and wanted another one. When I read that the sphynx is described as “an eternal kitten” I knew that was what I wanted, and when I first saw Honey, it was love at first sight! She was the runt of the litter (as was Hope) and was never going to be a medium to large cat which is what the breed is classified (except for her belly, Honey is about the size of an adolescent cat). That meant she was pet quality and not show quality (Don’t tell her that!!). Most people want show quality, but not me. I didn’t want to show Honey, I just wanted Honey!! Hope was a bit jealous when Honey moved in – at first I thought my grand plan of getting Hope a friend had failed, but after a few days Hope decided that Honey was quite a bit of fun. Honey had no fear of anything, and quickly set to work making the house her home too. My old tabby, Spot, tried to bully Honey, but much to her chagrin, Honey did not back down. Honey keeps me young, and definitely keeps the child inside me very much alive. She has a wonderful, affectionate personality, and is a totally crazy, fun loving pet. Honey has many silly attention getting antics (she does somersaults!!), and an unsurpressable need to wrap her arms around you. Her silly little wrinkly body is too irresistible not to touch, and to me, she is my little suede hot water bottle; she prefers to sleep under the covers when we go to bed at night. And if you are curious – Honey doesn’t wear clothes. She’s the resident nudist down here in Gainesville Florida. (Even her medical chart has her hair color listed as pink) And, yes, if you are wondering – no hairballs for this kitty. “Always amusing and never boring; that is the Sphynx cat!”
