Only by the name, you can guess that plant is African.
What's weird about them is that they are the main food source for... an unknown animal called Mokele-Mbembe.
That name actually describes 2 plants: Landolphia manii and Landolphia owariensis. Both grow in the West equatorial Gabon and central equatorial Congo, in the Zaire bassin. Landolphia owariensis also grows in the Mahale mountains region of the western Tanzania.
Another specie of Landolphia, Landolphia parviflora "Mubongo" has been reported to be eaten in Zambia, but as far as I know, nothing else is known.
