This is a different kind of Goth/Doom/Death Metal that is very significant for the
band from Östersund in Sweden. Their first album has many great qualities, and Equinox
show a great potential. The booming voice of Fredrik Wallin works very well with the
deep guitars and organs/keyboards, and the song quality is excellent.
Line-up is unavailable for this album.
The album starts with a song called Welcome Home, and you feel very welcome in the world
of Equinox ov the Gods. The intro with keyboards and bells, followed by an addition of
vocals and guitars leads the listener straight into the core of the band - deep, powerful
singing and drums, accompanied by background guitars, also deep and atmospheric.
Then comes a couple of less good songs, until the fourth song, Lord of the Crossroads, which
is one of the best metal songs ever to be recorded. It strarts out with a guuitar playing
the lead melody, and drums that working very well with the guitar. When the singing starts,
the song leads to its perfection, and the chorus/ outro vocals during the chorus is
completely brilliant. Here, Wallin shows his best abilities of singing with extreme power
and skill at a maximum pressure. The vocals are a mixture of clear and distorted vocals,
with a smoothness and power at the same time, with an echo added. Excellent!
It leads on to an instrumental track, followed by two less interesting songs, following the
same principle as before - deep vocals, guitars and quite good choruses. There is a lot of
genious behind these songs, too, but they do not really have the same sharpness as their
best songs. Nonetheless, they are good tracks, worth listening to.
Track 7 and 8, The Waiting and Resurrected, are setting sail for new land, and new heights.
Both these songs are very strong and powerful, and with a touch of magic woven in. The
songs start out rather calm and quiet, building up a crescendo in rage in the choruses/
finishes. In Resurrescted, the chorus is the very end of the song, and the verse and short
instrumental breaks lead into the finale, consisting of a pre-chorus and a chorus of great
sharpness and power.
Death Wish is another good song that follows, but has no real extra qualities, followed by
the Dance of the Dead, which might be the most boring track on the album. After that, the
album is taken to new ideas, with acoustic guitars, flutes and female backing vocals in the
last songs. The last song on the album is really good, with the lead vocals by Wallin,
with good organ melodies, and female vocals. This song is also very good, and worth some
extra attention while listening to the album.
The vocals, the organs, the way the guitars are used, and the way these components are
put together, make this album to a memorable piece of art.
