Critical Thinking and Speech is a required course
in the College Studies Program at Waukegan High School, in Waukegan, IL.
The course is usually taken by CSP students during their sophomore year.
It is an activities-based communication arts course designed to help students develop
the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the worlds of
college and work.
The course was expanded from one semester to a full year
beginning in the fall of 1998. The curriculum for the class was
fully revised and updated the previous summer by me, the instructor of the class,
lynne Shotola (can you think
of a better way to spend yourtrip to Colorado???).
The expansion of the course to a full year created a
great many opportunities for better, deeper, more thorough
learning for the students. Perhaps more exciting, however,
the expansion promoted the development of a Sophmore CSP
Learning Team, including Critical Thinking, World History,
Literature and Composition and, starting this fall, Chemistry.
The learning team environment has been extraordinary,
allowing for interdisciplinary curriculum activities
and helping us keep better track of all our students.
The 1999-2000 school year will mark my 3rd time teaching the class.
I think the class is a HUGE
amount of
fun to teach. More importantly, I deeply believe in the value and
importance of the skills the course teaches. With a little luck,
the class prepares its participants for college and work,
while also providing an enjoyable learning experience.
The point of this site is to help my students perform
better in my class by having access to as much resource
material as possible, and to help their parents develop
a better sense of both what their child is doing in my class
and who this person is who is teaching their child.
