Eponine

1815 – 1832

Éponine is a very tragic figure, even more so in the novel. It’s only at her death that she finally finds happiness.

“ She slowly opened her eyes that were now deep with the shadow of death, and said in a voice so sweet that it seemed already to come from another world:

‘You know, Monsiuer Marius, I think I was a little bit in love with you.’

She tried to smile, and died.”

My favourite Éponine so far in a recording is Kaho Shimada in the CSR. She’s even more impressive when you consider that when it was recorded she spoke very little English! Her accent really makes some of her lines and songs really sweet. Her “On My Own” isn’t as harsh as some are either!

Best Scene ~ Any of her scene with Marius are good. I especially like “The Robbery” and “Éponine’s Errand”.

Best Line(s) ~ ‘Some bourgeois two-a-penny thing’ by Kaho Shimada in the CSR. Her accent really makes this line stand out.

Best Song ~ I find “On My Own” can be a little angry and harsh sometimes. So I’ll have to go with the very sad but very sweet “A Little Fall Of Rain”.
