Fantine

1796 – 1823

Although she’s only in the musical for about half an hour, Fantine is one of the key characters in the story. My own favourite Fantine has to be Ruthie Henshall. All the others (LuPone, Byrne) tend to sound very similar. Ruthie’s Fantine has more strength and individuality to it.

Best Scene ~ Her arrest, she gets to show what she’s made of for once! And no-one says ‘I’ll kill you, you bastard try any of that! Even a whore who has gone to the bad won’t be had by a rat!’ like Ruthie does!

Best Line(s) ~ In the Epilogue from ‘Take my hand...’ onwards. The harmony with Éponine is lovely!

Best Song ~ "I Dreamed A Dream" and this has nothing to do with the fact that I can sing it!!
