That quote describes Javert’s attitude to a tee. Without a doubt, Javert is my favourite character in Les Misérables. Although he is the “villain” of the story he is definitely the most fascinating.
I also like the bit in the novel where Valjean emerges from the sewers with the wounded Marius only to be confronted by Javert. I like it because it shows that even though Javert is determined to arrest Valjean, he is not so unreasonable as to prevent Marius getting help.
“ ‘It is about him I wished to speak,’ said Valjean, ‘You may do what you like with me, but help me first to take him home. That is all I ask.’
Javert’s face twitched, as always happened when someone thought him capable of making a concession. But he did not refuse. Bending down, he took a handkerchief from his pocket, soaked it in water, and bathed Marius’ blood stained forehead.”My all time favourite Javert has to be Philip Quast. (Surprise, surprise…) In my opinion he gives the right blend of obsessiveness and belief in his own actions without seeming un-necessarily maniacal. A close second has to be Peter Corry who I’ve been lucky to see as Javert twice!
Best Scene ~ Has to be “Javert’s Intervention”. From the minute he utters 'Another brawl in the square...' he steals the scene. It also gives Javert the chance to show his more maniacal, obsessive side. (Being maniacally obsessive myself, I understand him completely…!)
Best Line(s) ~ ‘Shoot me now or shoot me later, every schoolboy to his sport. Death to each and every traitor! I renounce your people’s court!’ - I especially like the violins after ‘sport’.
Best Song ~ “Stars”, now there’s a surprise…
