Lost Angel

By Milly

Three years had passed since Pan was born and Gohan and Videl were now willing another child. They had tried for many years, but nothing ever seemed to work. They decided to go to see a doctor, who learned them a sad news: they probably would never have another baby. Videl has got really sick after Pan's birth, but even though it didn't seem so bad, she had now very few ovaries and was almost unable to have a baby. She had cried and cried for days, her dream of a big family totally destroyed, until a miracle happened. One day, Videl walked into the kitchen, a bright smile on her face. Her eyes were still red because of her tears, but she was shining with happiness.

-What ? What happened? Gohan asked, happy, but also surprised to see her so happy.

She kissed him and sat on him, putting her arms around his neck.

-You'll never believe it. The doctor called last night and...

She took his hand and put it on her belly.

-It's a miracle Gohan, I'm pregnant! I'm pregnant!, she cried out.

He looked at her, trying to understand.

-But it's impossible, the doctor said...

-I know what the doctor said, I know... but I went to see him yesterday so he could explain to me what I really had, and he made me passed some more tests. He called five minutes ago and said that I was one month pregnant.

He looked at her, silent. She was smiling happily, but he kept silent.

-Well, say something... she said, starting to be nervous.

-I cannot believe it! he suddenly cried out.

He stood up, taking her in his arms. He kissed her again and again as she was laughing. Pan came in the room, still sleepy.

-Mommy, Daddy, why are you laughing, what's funny?

Gohan let Videl down, then took Pan in his arms.

-My little angel... What do you think about having a little brother or a little sister?

She looked at him, trying to understand.

-Cool.... she finally said.

***

During the six following months of Videl's pregnancy, Gohan used to lay close next to her, his hands on her belly. She was always shining with happiness. She played outside with Pan, helping Gohan when he was starting to train their daughter. But suddenly, about two months before she gave birth to her baby, she fell sick. She had a strong fever and was unable to walk. She slept nights and days, Gohan on her side. He didn't sleep for days, crying over his sick wife.

One night, she woke up, and said:

-Honey, am I going to lose the baby? I don't want to lose the baby...

-No, honey, you won't...

He hold her close, trying to confort her, but tears were running down her cheeks. He knew that something bad was going to happen.

The doctor came to see her everyday for the following month. As the 9th month and the birth of the baby came closer, Videl finally started to feel better. She could stand up, and she could even walk downstair without any help, but still, Gohan was afraid that she wouldn't be strong enough give birth. Everynight, he used to look at her until she fell asleep, worried. He didn't want to lose her.

That night, Videl's fever had come back and Gohan had call the doctor. The doctor examined her as Gohan was walking in the room, worried.

- So, what do you say?

-I cannot do anything more then you've already done. She needs some sleep, otherwise her fever'll never go away. She can give birth to your baby any moment now, so I'd like to have her at the hospital.

He stood up and went to Gohan.

- You already know that it won't be easy for her, but I have to tell you that there is a real danger for her and the baby. She has been realy sick during her pregnancy, and I don't know if she's strong enough.

-I know, I know doctor... said Gohan, his eyes full of tears.

-So, take her to the hospital as soon as she wake up, it will be better if I keep her under observation.

-Thank you.

The doctor left as Pan started crying in her bed. Her father went to confort her with a last look at his wife.

-Pan, what's wrong? he asked taking her in his arms.

-Mom, she's sick, I heard you, I heard you crying... Daddy...

-No... Mommy is alright Pan... She is only tired... The baby will come soon and she'll feel better, I swear.

The little girl smiled, then went back to sleep. Gohan watched over her till she fell asleep, trying to relax. The next morning, he would take Videl to the hospital.

***

Videl was in her room, at the hospital. Chichi was sitting beside her, Pan on her knees, and Bulma was holding Bra in her arms, while Gohan, Trunks, Goten, Goku and Vegeta were all in the hallway. Goku was trying to calm down his oldest son, but, even if he was doing his best, he didn't have a clue how to do it. Vegeta was sitting on an ugly orange plastic chair, looking at them without any expression on his face. He understood the situation, he knew the feelings that Gohan was going threw right now, but he didn't want to show that he cared. Trunks and Goten were around him, trying to help Goku to confort his son, but they didn't have a clue either. Trunks and Goten were still too young, in a way, to understand, they didn't have enough experience with life to understand and Goku was... well, clueless, as usual.

-Thank you guys, but I don't think you can do anything more, really... Just go to the cafeteria, it's lunch time.

Goku's eyes started shinning, but they immediatly stopped, as, for once, he thought that it wasn't the moment for food.

-No, Gohan, I can't leave you...

-No, I'm telling you I'm alright, dad.

-Sure?

-Yeah, go on, I'll stay with the sad brat... said Vegeta.

-Hummm... I'm not so sure about that... said Goku.

-Yeah dad, go... I'll stay with... Vegeta, interrupted Gohan, not so sure about it either.

They all went away, except for Gohan and Vegeta who were sitting on two unconfortable plastic chairs. Then kept silent for long time until Gohan broke down in tears.

-Oh no! Like if it wasn't enough with the babies, you so-called adults need to cry too! said Vegeta.

But after a few minutes, he started to feel unconfortable. Gohan was still crying and he looked really bad. He remembered the little boy he fought when he first came on Earth, the way he always used to cry over his father and about to see his mother. He remembered a little child, almost still a baby, who fought with an uncredible courage. And now, he didn't understand why he was so hurt. It seemed that all this courage, that should have grown with the years, was gone. He started to put his arm around Gohan's shoulders, but immediatly stop. He had become human, but not that much.

-The woman's gonna be alright.

-What do you know, huh? asked Gohan, looking at him angrily.

-I am the prince of Saïya-gin, master...

-Shut up with that stupid speech you're always braggin' about. I'm tired of all this!

He stood up and started to walk over and over in the hallway in front of Vegeta. Vegeta felt a little bit of anger growing after he heard what Gohan said, but he controlled it,...for this time. He stood up and took Gohan's arms to make him stop.

-Now sit down... She is not even giving birth now... You're gonna turn crazy when she will.

Gohan sat down silently.

-I'm sorry... But tell me, how would you feel if there was a good chance Bulma would die, and you could do nothing against it?

-I... I would...

He didn't know what to say. He sat down next to Gohan and finally put his arms around Gohan's shoulders. Gohan turned to him, surprised, but he didn't try to push him away.

-It's totally stupid... I've fought you, I've fought Freeza, and Cell, and even more. And now, now that the woman I love, now that Videl needs me, ...I cannot help her. How can that possibly be?! It's just not fair! Gohan cried out.

-I'm sure she will be alright. Your woman is strong, really. She is a fighter too, remember? You've done everything you could, now, all you can do, is wait. If I ever learned something on this planet, it's that you cannot control everything. Bulma taught me that.

Gohan calmed down a little, than asked a question to Vegeta.

-Do you really, really love Bulma?

-Of course I do!

-No, I mean, do you really love her, would you be able to give up your life to save hers?

-I...

-Vegeta, if you had to make a choice, between being with Bulma and having everything you ever wished for, with the condition that you'd have to give up Bulma for your lifetime, what would you choose? An existence of pleasure, with money, and everything you want, or just a sight at her?

Vegeta was looking at the floor, thinking.

-For Videl, I'd give up everything I have, or ever could have. I love her, and I don't want to lose her. She's my soulmate...

-You're getting emotional here Gohan... said Goten behind his back.

Gohan looked at him silently, but the bite on his jaws showed his anger.

***

-So, you're feeling better? asked Chichi

Videl smiled to her mother-in-law and answered,

-Yeah. The doctor said that my fever was gone and that there was nothing to fear anymore, maybe except when will come the time to...

-I'm sure you'll be alright. Videl, you're strong, and besides, you remember for Pan. It really was easy, less than an hour after that, you were walking like if everything was alright, interrupted Bulma, playing with Bra.

-I know, I know everything will be alright, my fears are only about Gohan. He's totally destroyed. He's been acting crazy since I started to be sick. I'm afraid he can't take it anymore.

-I know... I'll check on him when the time will come. I promise, Chichi said, to confort her.

-Thank you...

She kissed her Chichi on the cheek and then smiled to her.

-What would I do without you?!

***

Goten and Trunks were talking in front of a cup of coffee, while Goku was still eating like mad. Vegeta was sitting beside his son, while Gohan was silently drinking a cup of coffee. Vegeta gave him glances from time to time, but most of the time, he was looking at the floor, concerned. The question Gohan had ask him was concerning him. He had never wonder about the real nature of his love for Bulma before, but now, he couldn't keep from thinking about it. Could he really give up his life for her? Could he give everything he has for her? He didn't know.

-So, you think he's gonna be alright?, Trunks asked, with a sight to Gohan.

-Yeah, I think so. There's no trouble with Videl, I don't know why he's freaking out this was. He's been under tension lately, but as soon as the baby will be born, he will be alright.

Goku stopped eating because his plates were empty and he layed done on his chair. Gohan drank a little bit of coffee.

-So, did you fight with Vegeta? Goku asked to his son.

-Of course we did, who do you think I am. I forced him to calm down a little. It did him some good, Vegeta answered before Gohan could say anything.

Vegeta didn't want anyone to know what went on that morning. He considered it wasn't good for his reputation, or something like that. Showing humanity wasn't his style.

-Yeah, you guys fought hard, Goten said, almost laughing.

-Shut up little brat! Vegeta said, angrily.

-No, you gotta shut up! Goten said back.

-Yeah, Vegeta, shut up for once.

-You Kakarrot, just shut up!

-Yeah, Goku, just shut up , that will do us some good!, Trunks said, standing up, as the other.

-Don't talk to my father little that!

-SHUT UP!!! EVERYONE'S GONNA SHUT UP!! Gohan cried out, standing up. He had thrown his carton coffee cup on the table while getting up, and there was coffee everywhere around. Everybody had shut up at the sound of Gohan's voice.

-I'm sick and tired of having you arguing in my face, and it makes me sick to see you guys telling me you're here to help me, while you're talking behind my back. You think I don't know I'm acting crazy?!

Everyone was looking at him silently.

-Now, I just want you to go away, to leave me alone. You can't do anything for me, or her. Just go...

-You sure? Goku asked after a little while.

Gohan sat down on his chair, without a look at them. They all stood up and went away slowly, not sure if it really was a good thing. Vegeta remained there, looking at Gohan.

-Just as an information, I've got the answer to your question. I'd pick Bulma, of course... I love her.

Gohan smiled to him and Vegeta walked away. Before passing the door, he said:

-Don't talk about that to anyone, I warn you...

***

Gohan oppened Videl's room door and went in with a smile to his wife. Chichi, Bulma and Bra were gone since a while, bringing Pan with them. Videl had slept for a few hours, and she was still sleepy. Gohan went to her bed and kissed her on the forehead.

-Hey, stanger...

-Hi, honey, have the doctor told you anything important?

-No, there's nothing wrong. My fever is gone, and I'm doing good. My contractions are going good, but we still have a lot of time...

-So, nothing to worry about, that's what he said?

Videl looked at him, looking concerned.

-Honey, I think you should relax a little. I know the pregnancy hasn't been really easy for us, especialy for us. We cannot do anything, we can just let go with things...

-I know, I know...That's what I'm going to do, I'm going to let things be.

-Alright.

He took his hand and kissed it. She smiled to her husband, finally really feeling better.

***

As for Pan, Gohan didn't want to wait in a room. He was beside his wife, holding her hand, in a blue hospital robe. Everything went alright, just like she said it would.

After four hours, they finally heard the baby's cries. The doctor was it and gave it to Gohan. He saw it was a boy, but that didn't surprise him. What surprised him was the fact that his son had a monkey tail.

-Videl...

-I know Gohan, I know... My little Gokun.

Gohan smiled to his wife has she was caressing the baby's few hair.

***

They had came from the hospital a few days ago. Pan was crazy with the baby, and the house was always full with people who came to see the baby. Vegeta was much interessed with the fact that the baby had Saiya-jin blood, even though they had took off the tail, to prevent any disaster.

The baby was quite little, but the doctor said everything was alright.

-He is really cute... really, Chichi said, taking her first and only grandson in her arms.

-Of course he's my son...

-And you're mine! Goku said, the mouth full of food. Chichi was in a good mood, so she only gave him a hard glance, and then smiled to Videl as she passed her the baby.

-And are you doing good, with the baby and everything? asked Bulma, as she was playing with her daughter. Vegeta was sitting next to her, his arms crossed on his chest.

-Yeah, I am... I'm sorry, it's late, you guys should go, the baby needs to sleep now, Gohan said, taking the baby in his arms. He put his son in his bed, while he was sleeping, went to the door. He gave him a last look, as he closed the light.

-Good night lil' Gokun. You'll be a great warrior, I'm sure. Daddy's gonna train you, just as he trains your sister... Yeah, she is already a warrior, he said before closing the door.

He was even more proud to be a father everytime he looked at his son and daughter.

***

The baby had not cry for all night long, not even when came the time to drink his milk. Videl started to worry when she woke up and saw that it was 10 am. She stood up and went to the baby's room. Gokun was still sleeping. She started to be even more worried. She approached him and saw that he was all blue.

-What? No!... No! she cried out.

Gohan ran to the room as soon as he heard his wife's cries. He immediatly saw the baby as he came in the room. He didn't came toward her. As she sat in the rocking chair, madly trying to make the baby sleep, like if he was still alive, singing him a soft song. Gohan was starring at her like if he didn't understand, but he did. He knew that things wouldn't be good...He knew it.

***

The doctor had said it was an heart problem, really rare, and almost impossible to detect... He had told them that it wasn't their fault, but they still felt guilty. They were now standing in front of their son's grave. Videl touched the stone with the tip of her fingers, crying. Gohan was crying too, standing over there, looking at the little angels on the white stone...

SonGokun would never be a warrior... But would always remain an angel...
