Lunch appeared at the beginning of Dragon Ball and was simply out of the story during DBZ, except for one mention in the manga, explaining why she had left KameHouse, and a little apparition in the anime, showing a bit better what she did. However, many fans believe it is too bad Akira got rid of her. She was an unusual, interesting, amusing and sexy character, that added to the story almost as much as the main ones. How? Let me give you my idea about this. |
When she was first introduced in the story, as a pretty girl who changed of appearance and personnality when she sneezed, Lunch wasn't very important. She didn't even go to the first Tournament. In fact, we could believe she was there just so Krilin and Goku would be accepted as Roshi's students, and also to give Akira some sexy girl to draw while Bulma was away. But then, she began to have a more important role during the Red Ribbon Saga, especially when she stole that very precious diamond from her own 'friends' (as a blond, of course), then returns (as purple-haired) and saves the gang from a bomb (sorta). She goes with Roshi to the two following Tournaments, her blond self cheering for Tenshinhan. She also goes with Yamcha and Bulma to 'Tenshinhan's rescue' against Piccolo. And after that last Tournament of Dragon Ball, she just disappears, said to be gone after Tenshinhan.
Purple haired, dark huge eyes, soft and nice: that is Lunch as Goku, Krilin and Roshi first meet her. She has a kind nature, is a little bit naive and very pleasing. She stays at Kame House to do a woman job: cleaning, cooking, taking care of the guys. Lunch could be seen as a total stereotype of the 'weak sex': she screams for help in her first appearance, cluelessly follows the kids who save her and accepts to live with with a pervert and his students. In most of her later appearances, she acts naively and many of her quotes go in that sense. Unlike her other self, she appreciates simple things (eh, she did like Kame house because it looked cute!). Although a bit stupid (let's face it...), she is really nice and her good nature make up for her... lack of guts? |
Blond hair, small green eyes, evil smirk and weapons at hand: Lunch as the fans first meet her. The name Kushami is sometimes used for this personnality and it means sneeze, which is a direct reference to her way of transformation. Kashumi begins the serie by wanting to kill everyone: we see her shooting Goku, Krilin and Roshi, or running after Krilin with a butcher knife. But with time, she calms down, actually becomes friend with the gang and... Fall in love?! Yes!! This is the reason of her departure from Kame House, the serie and her 'friends'' memory.
This side of Lunch is also known from the police, her being a (good) bank thief. Kushami loves money and didn't mind stealing a worthy diamond from her friends, aiming a fire weapon at them. In the anime, she is shown in DBZ for the last time right after another bank robbing. Although she softens with time, she never loses that wild side of her. A good example of it is when, during teen Goku and young Piccolo's fight, she kicks Kami's butt, sending him into a hole for protection. We can say she's not exactly into religion either. |
As most of you probably know already, Kushami loves Tenshinhan. Akira used this passion to make her leave Kame House after the third Tournament. But why exactly would she fall in love with such a guy? Especially when you know she declared herself right after the second Tournament, where they first meet (following me still?). However, I must precise that Kushami loves him, not Lunch, which is pretty obvious in the anime. So why Tenshinhan? My theory is that Kushami, being the wild liberated woman she is, needs a guy who's not all soft and tender. She has a thing for danger and action. Tenshinhan, in his first appearance, is totally a bad guy, therefore attractive for her. He's also cute (matter of opinion...) and well built. Of course she could not love someone weak, huh? With this she couldn't be disappointed, since at that time Tenshinhan was as strong as Goku.
After the Tournament, she spent some time 'with' him, because of the Piccolo fight and all. So it wasn't just a foolish crush: she knew him a little better, at least enough to keep loving him and threatening the Demon if he had dared hurting him. Unhappy to love an over-powerful man, she wants to protect him as well!I think the Tenshinhan/Kushami couple would be a very sweet one. They are both unusual characters and the little moment they spent together in DBZ (anime) just confirmed my opinion. However, Tenshinhan is not a man of romance and Lunch just doesn't love him. Too bad...
What happened to Lunch? She left to find Tenshinhan, in the anime we even show her failure, but after? Did she simply disapear? Why didn't she come back to KameHouse? Did she get married or did she die? Everything is possible, since we have no hint of what she became. Personally, I think she looked for Tenshinhan during a certain time (without finding him as shown in the anime though), then gave up and started a life resembling the one she had before meeting Goku and Krilin, which means aventure and no boredom. Eventually she dies. If you have a different theory, don't be afraid to send it to me!
Most fanfics about Lunch can tell 1) why she transforms when sneezing; 2) her love story with Tenshinhan; 3) what happened to her. Of course there can be other themes, but I think those are the principals when Lunch is the principal character.
