MADRID (Variety) - As expected, Fernando Trueba's ``The Girl of Your Dreams'' emerged as top picture at the 1999 Spanish Academy Awards, which took place Jan. 23.
The rambunctious drama about a Spanish film shoot under Germany's Third Reich scooped best film, best actress (Penelope Cruz) and five secondary awards.
But the real winner at the 1999 Goyas was Spanish filmmaking itself. Once a somewhat self-embarrassed clone of the Hollywood Oscars, the Spanish Goyas now mean significant revenue for the winner. One source estimated ``The Girl'' could expect to boost it take by some $700,000-$1.5 million.
Fernando Leon's caustic youth drama ``Neighborhood'' beat ``The Girl'' for best direction and best original screenplay, while Julio Medem's ``The Lovers of the Arctic Circle'' took best original score (Alberto Iglesias) and best editing (Ivan Aledo).
Santiago Segura's corrupt cop caper ``Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law'' won the best new direction statue. It also provided the most moving moment of a witty ceremony as an infirm Tony Isbert, the chipper leading man of so many '50s Spanish comedies, tottered up the awards ramp to pick up and rapidly pass on a heavy Goya bust for best supporting actor.
Fernando Fernan-Gomez won the best actor prize for his performance in Jose Luis Garci's period drama ``The Grandfather,'' the only prize for the picture, which had 13 nominations.
