Armando Iannucci

Radio 1
Series One 1993 (three half-hour programmes???)
Series Two 1994 (four hour-long programmes, one compilation)

Armando Iannucci originally worked for Radio 1 as a producer on shows such as The Mary Whitehouse Experience in the 1980s.  His profile evidently having risen following On The Hour (which he also produced, as well as co-writing), he returned on the other side of the glass to present, first of all, a brief run of half-hour shows in 1993, and the following year an hour-long show interspersed with records (the very first of many comedies in this format broadcast on Radio 1 between 1994 and 1997).  For this second series he was joined by a gaggle of familiar performers from On The Hour and its various spin-off projects: Rebecca Front, David Schneider, Peter Baynham, Richard Herring and (in the later programmes) Stewart Lee, all of whom took part in absurd in-studio discussions aping the ridiculous ‘posse’ format which was then prevalent on the station and practically everywhere else.  There were also sketches (most notably a masterful, drawn-out piece involving a doomed attempt to resolve all religious conflict by means of a student flatshare), more demonstrations of Armando’s unique tape-fiddling abilities, some deliberately pointless phone-in features and, anticipating the Chris Morris Music Show, the odd flash of sick or scandalous humour.
