When Harry Met Ally

Radio 4
1992 (four programmes)

Title of the century.  This was a sketch-and-monologue series featuring a pre-stardom Harry Hill and impressionist Alistair McGowan, then marginally the better-known of the two.  (The fact that they have done very little other work together leads to the interesting, if dubious, speculation that the pairing was engineered for the sake of the title alone).  Each programme featured a guest comedian: the four who appeared were Alan Davies, Jo Brand, Noel James and Hattie Hayridge.  McGowan has since appeared in programmes too numerous to mention, though rarely as himself; Hill, meanwhile, returned to Radio 4 the following year with Harry Hill’s Fruit Corner, the programme which saw the true launch of his utterly unique style.
