The Knowledge

Radio 1
1993 (four programmes)
Christmas Special 1993

A logical consequence of Radio 1’s move into comedy was this short series of half-hour shows which concentrated on the pop industry.  Presented as a spoof rockumentary, with narration by burbling DJ legend Alan “Fluff” Freeman, it was packed with muso humour and jokes at the expense of the obsessives and money-grabbers populating all corners of the music scene.  Written by Week Ending contributors Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil, with music arranged by Murray Gold, its high points included the sensational scoop that all punk bands were, in fact, seventies disco groups in disguise — the accompanying proof, in the form of the Clash performing ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’, was stunningly plausible.
