During the summer of 1997 we headed to California for vacation. We landed in San Francisco and picked up a Toyota Camry at the car rental company. The same day we drove down the very scenic coast highway towards Los Angeles and the first night we camped near the small city of Carmel. Clint Eastwood was not there to salute us. The next day we continued towards LA and found a nice campsite in Malibu Beach. The Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Universal Studios and the other must see places were visited.

After a few days in LA the sight was now on the national parks in Utah. The Bryce Canyon is a very scenic canyon and we spent one day hiking down and up the canyon.

Next day was the North Rim of Grand Canyon on our agenda. Not to much people and very pleasant day with wonderful views. We camped close to G.C. and the night was very cold - the water froze during the night. The alarm clock was set to 5.00 AM because we wanted an early start on the hike down to the Colorado River at the bottom of G.C. and we also wanted to be ahead of the mule transportation. It were warm and a very nice day after the sun had been up for a few hours. Downhill was easy but uphill was not as easy. The small path along the canyon side are very steep and narrow. After been hiking for 6 hours we took a lazy afternoon and was just enjoying the view on the North Rim.

Las Vegas was next attraction and we were not disappointed. With a lot of neon, shows and slot machines - even though we did not gamble - it was a great place. We stayed at the hotel New York, New York. The Ceasar Palace and all the other big hotels are neat places to visit and look at the interior, exterior and the people that are roaming around.

On our way to Sequoia and Yosemite National Park we drove through Death Valley which is as warm and dry as you can expect. It feels like someone is blowing with a huge hair dryer on you. Sequoia is a must see with all the super tall trees. Yosemite is also very pleasent place with a relaxed feeling. The El Capitan is a big challenge for the mountain climbers that comes too Yosemite for adventure. The evenings were spent in Camp Curry and we participated in the information sessions they arranged every evening.

San Francisco was next to see. We visited the old correction centre Alcatraz, the spectacular Golden Gate, the very alive China Town, took a ride with the cable cars, strolled around in the harbor and watched the sea lions that lives there. SF is nice city with a lot tourist attractions.

After spending 14 days in California, Nevada and Utah it was time for part 2 of the vacation and we flow to Seattle, but that is another story.
