The Pixies: Trompe Le Monde

I was introduced to the Pixies a couple years ago by a guy named Marty who used to work at the library when I volunteered there on Monday nites. He always used to look at the cd's I would check out and recommend other stuff. The Pixies were one such band. Trompe le Monde was their last album, released in 1991, and it's one that I do like. It's a blend of pop/punk and harder edged stuff, and while I tended to like the former better, the harder stuff is just as good. They were doing this style before it was really "cool". The title song has cool vocals and is catchy, as is "Alec Eiffel". Songs like "Sad Punk" and "Planet of Sound" are heavier rockers; "Sad Punk" turning introspective, and "Planet..." remaining rough. I always like a little humour in my music, and at times tend to find it in places that no one else does... "Subbacultcha" is one that fulfills that for me. It's kinda rappy, and more spoken word and yelling than anything else, and maybe it's suppossed to be serious, but I got a laugh out of it. "Motorway to Roswell" and "Distance equals rate times time" are possibly my two favourite tracks off of the album. They are strong, and have wonderful instrumental techniques being used throughout.
