Subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1, this was the first of a series of recordings
that were released near the beginning of the couple's relationship. Yoko Ono, a member of the Fluxus art movement, was a respected artist and had been producing pieces in non-traditional media (sound, video, conceptual) throughout the '60s; in fact she met Lennon when he came to one of her
gallery exhibitions. With The Beatles in often-fractious circumstances at that time, John Lennon poured his energies into collaborations with Yoko Ono.
This album, subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 2, is linked to its predecessor
(TWO VIRGINS: UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1) by name only. Though both offer recordings that found John Lennon happily stepping into the avant-garde world of his paramour, this album departs from the sound collage approach of their debut and instead offers a range of real time recordings. The
improvisational 26-minute "Cambridge 1969" is from a live performance and primarily features Yoko Ono's vocals and Lennon's feedback guitar.
The couple's third album in less than a year commemorated their wedding in
Gibraltar on March 20th, 1969. It was also the final installment of a sort of trilogy of releases which brought avant-garde music further into the mainstream than ever before (excepting "Revolution No. 9" on The Beatles' WHITE ALBUM).
Their subsequent releases headed more or less into the realm of traditional song structures.
Live Peace In Toronto symbolised the
status and the concerns John was to later persue. A combination
of old and new songs with the Plastic Ono Band who had previously
never played together.
The Beatles were no more and John with
the Plastic Ono Band created an album with songs of meaning. Like MOTHER, that is sung to everyone yet, really
for himself and the pain he was forced to deal with. This album is a classical
album for songs just being raw. Hardly any modification took place
for any special sounds or enhancements. Just listen to
WELL WELL WELL. Now! That is a classic raw recording.
Imagine gained the power and status of today, when John was murdered. A song with passion and feeling that in a way, everyone can relate too. We must not forget the power of the other songs on the album. John later acknowledged, that Imagine was derived
from Yoko's book GRAPEFRUIT.
Many would rate this as John's greatest
album. With love songs such as OUT OF THE BLUE, I KNOW (I Know ) & YOU ARE
HERE are equally
matched with the power of the lyrics used for BRING ON THE LUCIE ( Freeda Peeple. )
Sometime In New York City is an album
full of powerful political motivated songs. SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY, ANGELA, JOHN
SINCLAIR & WOMAN IS THE NIGGER OF THE WORLD.All are catchy in tune, yet follows John's
writing pattern with powerful structure and meaning behind the
words. Unlike most songs of today's generation, where the listening is seen through the eyes and not heard through the ears. However, this political
based album was released in the spring of 1972.
Another
album that has beauty and love in the depths of songs such as BLESS YOU, SCARED, OLD DIRT ROAD
& SURPRISE, SURPRISE (Sweet Bird Of Paradox). Of course, there is John's social -
hard lined hitting song in the form of STEEL
& GLASS. A good
album to listen too. His last album of new material
until the release of DOUBLE FANTASY in 1980.
I am more enticed to John's singing
when he performed covers. He seemed more at ease with the old rocking style as he returned back to the roots of Rock 'n' Roll. Unfortunately, due
to legal matters occuring with the release of ABBEY ROAD back in 1969; the similiarities of COME TOGETHER & Chuck Berry'sYOU CAN'T CATCH ME forced John and the Beatles to make a decision or face the courts. John
settled out of court and agreed to perform two of Berry's songs
on a album. Hence the release of ROCK 'n' ROLL. In my mind, the best album of John's solo career.
SHAVED FISH was John's last album before semi -
retiring to look after son Sean. Shaved Fish was a
compilation album of the songs that John was known for and
resembled strength and concerns of the world's social attitudes.
The disappointment to the album was the incorporation of the GIVE PEACE A CHANCE(reprise). Many would agree, that the album
should have been complemented with the full version of GIVE PEACE A CHANCE. We would be later satisfied with it's
inclusion on THE JOHN
LENNON COLLECTION.
The end of a career and a brilliant
life. The last album John would make. Once again, like with SOMETIME
IN NEW YORK CITY, Yoko would share the spotlight with Yoko. No one will forget the beauty involved in the album. Escpecially
with the likes of songs: (Just Like) STARTING OVER & WOMAN Each possessing such inner beauty within the
lyrics and music, that reflects on the entire album. For this being his
last album, John surely went out in style and memory! "Beauty
comes from within the heart." John surely captured
this and presented it well. As Paul said once " What a
suitable ending!"
An album that was in the making. It
was due to become the followup to DOUBLE FANTASY. A
mixture of singles and pieces from other
albums as well as new songs from Yoko. GROW OLD WITH ME was made with the use of a rhythm box
and piano. This is a demo, so sound quality is poor. But, it is
the last recording made of the song. Unfortunately, the tapes
with the alternative versions, disappeared after his death. Just listening to the demo, you can preceive what the song could have been, if John was alive to finish it off. We will never know know!
An
album that most fans were eagarly awaiting. The best of the best.
This is the first time we see INSTANT KARMA! & MOVE OVER MS.L on an album. But, who could really go
past the live atmosphere captured with INSTANT KARMA! Then
there is the superb brilliance of WATCHING THE WHEELS. This is an album for those who are
curious or just want a taste. This is the album to get!! Today,
you can chose from either LENNON
LEGEND or theTHE LENNON COLLECTION.
Lennon's last live performance.
Performed at Madison Square Gardens, NY August 30th 1972. It wasn't
until 14 years later when the songs were digitally re-mastered for release. Most
of the songs performed are of his hard hitting political style,
with John venturing back to the past just once with: COME TOGETHER & HOUND DOG. An album that captures the feeling of what it was
like at the concert, to an extent though. To hear a live performance with
no dubbing tapes used, vocals raw and sudden changes to the song both with the music and lyrics is just music!
An album with early studio takes of
songs heard from WALLS
AND BRIDGES. Included on the album; two songs never heard before. HERE WE GO AGAIN & ROCK AND
ROLL PEOPLE. We also get to hear
the writing talent of engineer, PHIL SPECTOR with his song
TO KNOW HER IS TO
LOVE HER. That some of you may remember, The Beatles perfroming during their live sessions at the BBC. Again, John perfroms covers. Menlove Ave is the road where John
lived with his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George. A bit of trivia for some of you. In this album,
you can hear in John's voice the roots of the music he loved. There is the
American influence arising from Fats Domino, Elvis and Phil Spector. Also, you can hear the Liverpudlian
within his voice.
This is the soundtrack album to the
motion picture. Songs range from his years with the Beatles: TWIST AND SHOUT, HELP! A DAY IN
THE LIFE & REVOLUTION through to his solo career with, IMAGINE (rehersal), MOTHER, WOMAN
& IMAGINE. We hear for the first time the demo of what would be later heard
on ANTHOLOGY 2 - The
Beatles. REAL LOVE. This album, if you are looking for
classic John, then this is it! Right from PLEASE PLEASE ME to
DOUBLE FANTASY.
Released in 1990
under the Parlophone label, this 4 CD box set was the first such compilation of Lennon's songs. Each CD representing fragements of songs from Imagine to Double Fantasy. This collection
pays respect and homage to Lennon. Each song holds its own spotlight, without being clouded over by any other song. Truly a collection for those who like Lennon. There is never a disappointing
song. This box set has been discontinued.
Imagine a place where the personal, political, and emotional elements of
John Lennon's music converge together seamlessly in one cohesive production. An assortment of his finest solo work, LENNON LEGEND: THE VERY BEST OF JOHN LENNON is of great interest to anyone who's ever been a fan of
the Beatles, the Plastic Ono Band, Yoko Ono, or simply the genius himself. Ranging from a rendition of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" to the sounds of the Plastic Ono Band and the Harlem Community Choir on "Happy Xmas" and
the classic anti-war anthem "Give Peace A Chance." The recordings assembled here stand as a testament to one of rock's most complex and influential musical talents. If you believe that Lennon's greatest period of
creativity came to an end with the Beatles, you owe yourself a listen to this album.
Released late 1998. It is an album full of live
performances, demos created within John's home (Ascot)and the recording studio, including some wild sessions. The four discs really do give you an
insight on how John was at home with his family and at work with
his passion in the studio. Each disc represents stages of his life as well as representing his
albums and years. The
first disc is from John's solo days in England, the Plastic Ono
Band and Imagine years.Disc 2 is from John's
early days in NYC: Sometime in New York City and Mind Games
years. Disc 3 is
from the time John spent in Los Angeles. The Walls and Bridges
and Rock & Roll years.The 4th and
final disc is from John's years in the Dakota Apartment building
in New York. The Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey years. Words of descritption do not give
credit to this collection. The best way to give credit to this collection is for you to listen. You will surely feel an appreciation, even if you are not
a fan. It is worth the buy! There are some tracks that never made any of John's albums. I'm The
Greatest, Goodnight Vienna, Serve Yourself and Be My Baby. There are some tracks that involve the family.
If the corresponding Lennon Anthology box (4 CDs) gives you more inside information than you ever wanted about anyone--even he of former Beatle
fame--then WONSAPONATIME is your ticket. With these select out-takes and demos Yoko Ono has compiled the aural equivalent of a snap shot "brag
book." From shaming Paul on "How Do You Sleep" to wooing Yoko on "Oh My Love;" from the minimalist screed of "I Found Out" to the utopian yearning
of "Imagine," Lennon vents and reflects in mostly familiar tunes with alternative settings.
