Queen Elizabeth II

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born 21st April 1926, elder daughter of King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and a great-great grandchild of Queen Victoria. On the death of King George VI at Sandringham on 6th February 1952, a new era began when Elizabeth succeeded to the throne. Her coronation took place on 2nd June 1953 in Westminster Abbey, an event the nation witnessed through the medium of Television, albeit in its infancy.

The Queen reigns to this day, having celebrated her Silver Jubilee (1977), her Golden Jubilee (2002), and recently, her Diamond Jubilee (2012). Long live the Queen!
