Revision notes – Area and Perimeter

Shape

Perimeter

Area

What is the difference between perimeter and area?

The perimeter of a figure is the distance around its edges

The area of a figure is the amount of flat surface it contains ( what is inside the lines)

 Square

 Perimeter

Add up the four sides of the square

eg  a + a + a + a

= 4a

 Area

Multiply one side by another side (they are the same length therefore squaring one side gives the same anwser)

a x a

= a2

  Rectangle

 Perimeter

 h + h + b + b

= 2 (h + b)

 Area

Base x height

= b x h

 Triangle

 Perimeter

Add up the three sides of the rectangle eg  a + b + c

 Area

 ½ b x h

h = perpendicular height of triangle

 Circle

 Perimeter = Circumference

= 2pr

 Area

= pr2
