Q.2    Employment of Under-18's

John is 15 years old.  There is a position for pump attendant in the local 24-hour petrol
station.  The job involves serving fuel, washing cars and vans and keeping the forecourt clean and tidy.  The owner of the petrol station wants John to work from 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday and Thursday nights, Friday night from 8pm to 9pm and 5am to 1pm each Saturday and Sunday during the school term.  During the Summer holidays, John will get two weeks holidays.  John does not know whether to take the job or not.  He said this to the employer and the employer told him to take it or leave it.

John needs your advice.  He really wants the job but does not know what his rights are.  Advise John in relation to his rights under the The Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996.

Q.3    Employing Staff

Mary owns a delicatessen.  Up until now she has been running the business on her own but recently her business has grown and it is becoming increasingly difficult to run it alone.  She feels she will need to employ somebody to work in the kitchen.  However, as this is her first time to employ somebody she is not sure what she must do. 

Advise Mary on the procedure she must go through when deciding to employ staff.  Also inform Mary whom the employee must contact after accepting the job.
